Baku (Azeri: Bak) is de hoofdstad van Azerbeidzjan.

Baku is de grootste stad in de Kaukasus en de hoofdstad van Azerbeidzjan. Bakoe ligt aan de kust van de Kaspische Zee op de zuidpunt van het schiereiland Absheron. Klimaat

Vervoer van/naar de luchthaven:

• Bus T1 Airport Express rijdt tussen de luchthaven en het treinstation (de bus wacht aan de overkant van het station) met een tussenstop bij metrostation Koroglu. De rit kost 1.30 manat, te betalen met BakiKart (dezelfde als in de metro). De bus rijdt elke 30 minuten. Bovendien loopt de N16 tussen de luchthaven en Samed Vurgun Park, in het hart van Bakoe. De reis kost 1 manat en duurt ongeveer 40-60 minuten. De service rijdt elke 30 minuten, van 's morgens vroeg tot 's avonds laat. De bus vertrekt buiten het luchthavengebouw, aan de overkant van de parkeerplaats. De service eindigt om 40.3785349.852762 Samed Vurgun's Park, op de 28 Mei Straat. .
• Minibus 135 rijdt tussen de rotonde op de luchthaven (15 minuten lopen van de luchthaven) en het metrostation van 28 mei. De reis duurt een uur en kost 0,40 manat.
• Taxi: Een vlotte rit van het vliegveld naar de stad kan een gedoe zijn. De laagste prijs die u kunt krijgen voor een taxi naar het centrum zou ongeveer 15 manat moeten zijn (oude Lada, ongemarkeerde taxi). Slechts één taxibedrijf mag zaken doen op de luchthaven. Dit monopolie drijft de prijs op tot bijna 50 manat en vaak heb je geen andere opties, vooral als je laat aankomt. De politie dwingt af en toe alle taxichauffeurs die zaken proberen te doen aan de rand van de luchthaven, waardoor u met een hoog tarief blijft zitten. Taxi's hebben geen meter, dus u moet van tevoren onderhandelen. Als u geen redelijke prijs kunt vinden, ga dan het vliegveld uit, langs de taxistandplaats en vraag de taxichauffeurs aan het einde van de parkeerplaats. Wees voorzichtig, want de meeste Baku-cabines zijn ongemarkeerd. Laat de taxichauffeur niet opnieuw met u onderhandelen over de prijs. Het is een veel voorkomende truc om bij aankomst op uw bestemming veel meer te vragen. U bent niet verplicht om te betalen wat zij vragen. Voor 5 manat kun je een taxi nemen vanaf het vliegveld naar Metro Azizbejov. Vanaf daar zijn het vier tot zes stations naar het stadscentrum - maar alleen van 06:00 tot 00:00 uur.

Met de trein

Binnenlandse treinen zijn erg goedkoop, en de meeste reizen kosten minder dan 10 manat. Dat maakt het goedkoper dan een verblijf in een hostel.

Internationale treinen zijn verkrijgbaar vanaf Georgië, Rusland en Oekraïne op regelmatige basis.

• Tbilisi – Dagelijks vertrekt er een nachttrein. De reis duurt 13-14 uur, afhankelijk van de lengte van de grenscontroles. De trein maakt een tussenstop in Ganja en een aantal kleinere steden. Het is een comfortabele reis omdat de grenscontroles niet midden in de nacht plaatsvinden (let dus goed op de openingsdatum van je visum). De trein is een oude Sovjettrein, voorzieningen zijn niet erg goed, dus wees voorbereid. Er is onderweg thee verkrijgbaar voor 1 manat. Bovenste bedden zijn eigenlijk 5 lari minder.
• Moskou – De reis duurt 51 uur en vertrekt een keer per week, en er zijn ook verbindingen van Rostov en Charkov. Treinen die door Rusland rijden, worden beheerd door de Russische Spoorwegen. Dienstregeling en tickets zijn verkrijgbaar bij rzd.ru.
• Kiev – Ondanks het conflict in Oost-Oekraïne lijkt de spoorverbinding tussen Bakoe en Kiev actief. Een keer per week rijdt een trein de 60 uur durende reis.
• Ankara – De lang vertraagde spoorverbinding tussen Georgië en Turkije is op 30 oktober 2017 alleen voor goederenvervoer geopend. Passagiersdiensten via Tbilisi start naar verwachting begin 2020.

Er zijn voetgangersstraten en straten rond het Fonteinplein, de kust en de oude stad. Je kunt ook naar andere plaatsen lopen, maar het kan zijn dat je drukke straten moet oversteken omdat er niet altijd voetgangerstunnels beschikbaar zijn. De zebrapaden werken volgens het "I'm feeling lucky"-principe en zijn meestal niet echt veilig, vooral 's nachts niet. Gebruik 's nachts uw telefoonscherm (niet uw zaklamp) om aan de naderende auto's aan te geven dat u de straat oversteekt en andere mensen te volgen.

Met de fiets

Baku is een geweldige stad om op de fiets te verkennen. Behalve de up-town, de stad, inclusief de oude stad (çəri Şəhər) en het centrum is redelijk vlak, en hoewel er enkele straten zijn die gevaarlijk zijn om te rijden, is er bijna altijd een veilige, snelle route naar je bestemming.

Hoewel er geen aparte fietspaden in de straten zijn en auto's en fietsers vaak de smalle straatjes van Bakoe delen, is de stad erg fietsvriendelijk. Wees tijdens het fietsen op straat heel voorzichtig, pas op voor andere fietsers, blijf altijd dichter bij de beloopbare kant van de straat en laat het andere verkeer zien waar u heen gaat (bijv. door uw hand uit te steken) om ongelukken te voorkomen en vlotte doorstroming van het verkeer.

Met de bus/minibus

Bussen en minibussen kosten 0,30 manat per persoon en kunnen je naar bijna elke plaats in Bakoe brengen. Bestemmingen worden meestal aan de voorkant en aan de rechterkant van de bus vermeld.

Nieuwere bussen (de rode) accepteren alleen elektronisch geld in de vorm van metrokaarten, verkrijgbaar bij elk metrostation. Sommige grotere busstations hebben machines om kaarten op te waarderen, maar niet nieuwe te kopen.

Er zijn enkele bussen die 0,35 manat kosten, b.v. die van de Bibi Heybət-moskee in het zuiden. Dit maakt het opladen van elektronische wegwerpkaarten een uitdaging: als je de tickets voor eenmalig gebruik koopt, zijn ze misschien niet voldoende als je ze gewoon laadt met 0,40 manat, denkend aan één keer heen en weer gaan.

Met de metro

De metro gaat naar veel plaatsen in Bakoe en kost slechts 0,30 manat. Het is de minst dure manier om Bakoe te verkennen, naast wandelen. Vraag een kassier of bediende. U moet een Bakı Metropiliten Kart (2 manat restitueerbare borg) en laad het als een normale metropas. Je kunt ook een beperkte kaart (0,2 manat) kopen met 1, 2, 3 of 4 reizen (de laatste kost 1 manat). Meerdere personen kunnen dezelfde kaart gebruiken. Als alternatief kunt u een Azerbaycan Sosial Kart zoals die op sommige Azerbeidzjaanse geldautomaten. De metromedewerkers helpen je graag verder als ze in het Azeri of Russisch worden gesproken, en sommigen begrijpen misschien Engels.

Op het metrostation en bij sommige bushaltes kunt u een metrokaart kopen bij een kaartautomaat. U kunt de taal van de machine wijzigen in Engels.

Het rijdt van 06:00 tot 24:00 uur en is erg druk in de spits.

Wees voorzichtig bij het overstappen van treinen op de overstapstations (28 mei en Jafar Jabbarli Cəfər Cabbarlı) omdat de bewegwijzering niet gemakkelijk te herkennen is.

Er zijn berichten dat mensen zijn gearresteerd terwijl ze foto's van het metrostation maakten. Er zijn duidelijke bewegwijzering op de stations die het nemen van foto's verbiedt, aan de buitenkant is het oké.

Het metrostation Avtovaghzal is van buitenaf de moeite waard, want het is een gigantische glazen piramide.

Met de trein

De elektrische trein van Bakoe rijdt door verschillende delen van Bakoe en het omliggende gebied, waaronder: Sumqait. 1 man.

Met de kabelbaan

De Baku-kabelbaan is een geweldige manier om bij de Viewpoint en Flame Towers te komen. Het is niet te duur.

Met de taxi

Londense taxi's zijn geïntroduceerd in Bakoe en de reiskosten bedragen 0,70 manat per km. Andere voertuigen zijn echter ook beschikbaar. Een taxi kost 4-10 manat voor uitstapjes in het centrum van Bakoe. Het is belangrijk om het eens te worden over de prijs van het tarief voordat u aan de reis begint, anders kunt u verwachten dat u veel meer moet betalen dan u zou moeten.

De meeste taxichauffeurs verdubbelen simpelweg de prijs voor toeristen. Dus, het halveren tijdens het onderhandelen en het doen van de walk-away-truc, zou de echte prijs moeten onthullen. Een prijs verdubbelen is schijnbaar veel gemakkelijker dan verdrievoudigen. Gebruik anders gewoon Bout (een taxi-app voor je mobiel) als indicator en/en onderhandelaar.

Als u Bakoe verlaat met een taxi, kunt u beter vertrouwen op Google Maps en de chauffeur aansturen. Veel chauffeurs lijken slechts één weg in en uit naar bezienswaardigheden buiten Bakoe te kennen, maar geen efficiënte manieren daartussenin.

Take bus 125 (e.g. near the Azneft dairəsi roundabout south of the old town) for 0.35 manat, you need a Baki Card.). This is a historical mosque in Baku, Azerbaijan. The existing structure, built in the 1990s, is a recreation of the mosque with the same name built in the 13th century by Shirvanshah Farrukhzad II Ibn Ahsitan II, which was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1936.
  The Bibi-Heybat Mosque includes the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum (a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad), and today is the spiritual center for the Muslims of the region and one of the major monuments of Islamic architecture in Azerbaijan. It's locally known as "the mosque of Fatima"
  The old mosque was situated in the southern part of the tomb, while there was a 20 meter high minaret in the west part of the mosque. Later a crypt and two niches were added to the mosque to the south of the minaret. On the niches there were inscriptions containing the name of Fatali Khan, whose tombstone marble slab is now in the Azerbaijan State Museum of History.

Baku Region

Outside the city, on the Absheron Peninsula, there are several interesting sites, like Yanar Dag (the burning mountain) and the Atashgah Fire Temple (with roots to ancient Indian migration), for a day or evening trip that are easy to reach via taxi or public transportation. Moreover, the scenery along your route is itself a fascinatingly ugly sight to be seen, a desert wasteland with white salt flats and natural oil pools seeping up to the surface.

In addition, the Baku Region is famous for its active mud volcanoes that might also be reached within a day. It's a mud volcano but without any active mud vents, but instead the waste of the neighbouring communities. However, it might provide for a quite apocalyptic photo scenery, in case you have too much time on your hands or are nearby.

There are a couple of beaches including Shikhov Beach, but they are polluted by sewage and industrial waste. Outside the city, however, there are a few very nice sandy beaches on the Caspian. In particular Bilgəh en Amburan beaches, on the north coast of the Absheron Peninsula are great spots to cool off from heat. Further afield are the northern beaches and resorts of Northeastern Azerbaijan.

• Sabunchu Flea Market (Take the red line metro to Nefchilar, and from there catch the no. 40 bus to Sabunchu. Stay on the bus until you see an indoor food market; the main flea market is through this on the left). A huge flea market next to some oil fields, seems to be mainly Azerbaijani families selling off old stuff from their homes. Some great finds to be had but it does take a while to sift through all the mounds of odd clothing and random bits of scrap metal. Women visiting alone should be more cautious than in central Baku, foreigners attract attention here and being followed isn't unheard of.

A cultural note Although tea houses (çay xanalar) in Baku usually allow Western women to enter, in rural areas, it is often forbidden for females to enter such establishments. Women drinking in Baku is a la mode, but it is taboo for women in rural Azerbaijan to consume alcohol.

There are many outdoor tea houses (çayxanalar) that serve tea and sweets to people in their own individual nooks. Going to them can be a great way to get a sense of the local culture. If you are adventurous, try challenging a local Bakuvian to a game of backgammon (nard) or dominoes.

Many cafés in Baku now have free WiFi. In general, internet cafes in Azerbaijan are called "internet klubs" and they are found throughout Baku. Public WiFi service is available in central areas and attractions, making it comfortable to the tourists to connect.

Post office

Azerbaijan Post locations are dispersed throughout Baku. Mailing an international letter generally costs 0.8 manat.

As Azal seems to be in a permanent state of flux as to where their offices are located, pop into a travel agent and ask about tickets very carefully before buying anything. In some cases, like Naxcevan or last-minute flights, you will absolutely have to go the ever-moving central office during a few random opening times in order to get your tickets processed. Baku is considered a safe city, nevertheless common sense is useful as in all other big cities. Homeless people do not harass or attack people and are very safe to be around. De biggest problem in Baku is driving. Many drivers do not obey rules and speed.

The security is rather high, with regular security checks at some attractions and metro stations. The metro has police guarding on the both ends of the escalators.

Since the Karabakh conflict re-ignited in September 2020, security has been further tightened, and curfew has been established between 21:00 and 06:00.

You must speak in Azeri, Turkish or Russian to communicate your needs. It would be a good idea to memorize key phrases before coming to Azerbaijan - see the Praten section for phrasebooks. The police are friendly and nice and try to help you as much as they can. Try to be nice and understanding and don't get frustrated if you don't understand each other immediately. Write down your phone's IMEI code in case it gets lost so it is easier for the police to find.

Safety tips

The roads can be treacherous at night due to unseen potholes and dimly lit cars. Most areas in and near the downtown are mostly safe. There are some underpasses under particularly busy roads (some with escalators), and some zebra crossings and traffic lights. Watch out for traffic police if otherwise crossing a busy road, they may try to fine you 20 manat for a traffic offence (even though the locals do it constantly).

Within Azerbaijan

• Nabran – Relax by the Caspian on the beach or in a resort. Azerbaijan's biggest tourist destination for international travellers and a coastal city close to Xachmaz.
• Quba – Its urban suburb is home to the largest Azerbaijani Jewish community in the mountains and is considered one of the largest Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union.
• Khinalug (Xinaliq) – A scenic, remote and ancient mountain village, and the mountain of the same name nearby. Once a centre of Zoroastrianism; today the few inhabitants are an ethnic isolate believed to be descendants of the Caucasus Albanians (unrelated to modern-day Albanians of Albania).
• Sheki – A 7-hour bus ride to the northwest. A beautiful city in the Caucasus mountains with lots to see and do. It has one of the largest densities of cultural resources and monuments that span 2,700 years of Azerbaijani history.
• Lahich – A cozy and remote highland village, on the way to Sheki. Famous for its copper work.
• Shamakhi – A town that used to be the capital of the Medieval state of Shirvan. Famous for its traditional dancers, Şamaxı dancers, and its impressive mosque. An ancient history and once one of the key cities along the Silk Road.
• Naftalan – A well-known petroleum spa resort, the centre of medical tourism in Azerbaijan. Go and enjoy the oil baths.
• Ganja – One of the oldest cities in the Caucasus.
• Nakhchivan (region) – The Baku Airport is one of the few in the world offering flights to Nakhchivan and travelers heading that way should book a flight from here.

Outside Azerbaijan

• Georgia – There are direct buses and trains into Tbilisi from Baku.
• Iran – Buses take international travellers onwards from Baku there.
• Turkmenistan – A ferry departs daily from Baku across the Caspian Sea to Turkmenbashi. This ferry has become something of a sleeper hit with backpackers on the Silk Road, but is very uncomfortable and should only be taken by adventure-seekers.
• Kazakhstan – A similar ferry (often the Merkury-1 or the Professor Gul) leaves from "Baku International Port" in Alat, 60 km south of Baku (the ferry previously left from Baku harbour proper until late 2018). The cabins are basic but clean and (fairly good) food is served on board, three square meals a day. It takes approximately 30 hours, and arrives at the port of Kuryk in Kazakhstan (be warned! The port is in the middle of nowhere and the cabbies there are hustlers. Best to try to hitchhike a truck out of the port, many of the drivers are friendly Ukrainians, to avoid US$30 or more for a taxi). US$70 4-person cabin, US$80 2-person. Cars, motorbikes and bicycles also taken.
