Ho Chi Minh Stad (Vietnamees: Thanh Phố Hồ Chí Minh), algemeen bekend als Saigon (Vietnamees: Sai G .n) of door de afkortingen HCMC of HCM, is de grootste stad in Vietnam (bevolking en gebied) en de voormalige hoofdstad van de Republiek Vietnam (Zuid-Vietnam).

Na de val van Saigon in 1975, Saigon werd hernoemd Ho Chi Minh Stad. De oude Saigon-naam wordt echter nog steeds gebruikt door zowel Vietnamezen als buitenlanders, vooral wanneer wordt verwezen naar het meest centrale deel van de stad waar de meeste toeristen naartoe trekken. Hoewel Hanoi in het noorden de hoofdstad van een verenigd Vietnam is, blijft Ho Chi Minh-stad het belangrijkste economische en financiële centrum van Vietnam. Hoewel het niet de lange geschiedenis heeft die steden leuk vinden Hanoi en Tint hebben, is het de modernste en meest kosmopolitische stad van Vietnam, met invloeden van de voormalige Franse koloniale heersers en de etnisch Chinese gemeenschap in Cholon die diep verankerd is in de lokale cultuur, misschien wel het meest zichtbaar in de keuken.

Hoewel Vietnam sinds de sluiting van de Vietnamese oorlog, zijn tot op de dag van vandaag de culturele verschillen zichtbaar die voortkomen uit de deling van Vietnam. Tot op de dag van vandaag zijn de lokale bevolking in Ho Chi Minh-stad meer zakelijk en minder ideologisch ingesteld dan die in Hanoi in het noorden. Bovendien zijn zuiderlingen ook doorgaans gastvrijer tegenover westerse bezoekers dan noorderlingen. De oorlog in Vietnam - in Vietnam de 'Amerikaanse oorlog' genoemd - blijft een gevoelig onderwerp en het is raadzaam om het niet ter sprake te brengen in discussies met de lokale bevolking. Geschiedenis

Het eerste bewijs van een nederzetting in het gebied dateert uit de Funan rijk (1e - 6e eeuw na Christus). Na de val van het Funan-rijk kwam het gebied uiteindelijk onder controle van Champa, waarin het werd genoemd Baigaur. Met de opkomst van de Khmer-rijk, werden de Chams uiteindelijk verdreven, en de nederzetting werd opgenomen in het Khmer-rijk en hernoemd tot Prooi Nokor. Het groeide uit tot een etnische Khmer-meerderheid, die zelfs na de val van het Khmer-rijk bleef bestaan, en pas in de 17e eeuw begonnen etnische Vietnamezen zich in het gebied te vestigen. In 1698, toen het al een etnische Vietnamese meerderheid had, Nguyen heren stuurde Nguyễn Hữu Cảnh naar het gebied om Vietnamese administratieve structuren op te richten, en zo op te nemen in de Vietnamese Lê-dynastie. Na verloop van tijd werd de stad Prey Nokor bekend onder de Vietnamese naam Sai G .n.

Saigon werd afgestaan ​​aan de Fransen onder de Verdrag van Saigon in 1862, en werd de hoofdstad van de Franse kolonie Cochinchina, die het grootste deel van het huidige Zuid-Vietnam omvatte. Als gevolg hiervan heeft de stad een rijk Frans koloniaal erfgoed, met veel prachtige Franse koloniale gebouwen in het stadscentrum en een sterke cafécultuur. Na de onafhankelijkheid in 1955 werd Saigon de hoofdstad van het kapitalistische Zuid-Vietnam, met Hanoi de hoofdstad van het communistische Noord-Vietnam te worden. Saigon werd in 1975 ingenomen door communistische Noord-Vietnamese troepen, waardoor Vietnam onder communistisch bewind werd herenigd. De stad werd hernoemd Ho Chi Minh Stad door de zegevierende communisten in 1976, hoewel de oude naam Saigon nog steeds vaak wordt gebruikt door de lokale bevolking. Toekomst

De wijk Thu Thiem aan de oostkant van de Sai Gon-rivier is rond 2010 vrijgemaakt voor herontwikkeling van hoogbouw. De regering is van plan om de bewoners van District 1 naar de nieuwe woningen te verhuizen en vervolgens veel meer van dat district te herbouwen.

Klimaat

Ho Chi Minh City heeft een tropisch klimaat met natte en droge seizoenen. Het droge seizoen dat loopt van december tot mei. De meest aangename tijd om te bezoeken is van december tot februari, wanneer de temperatuur en luchtvochtigheid lager zijn. Maart en april zijn heet met temperaturen die kunnen oplopen tot 40 ° C (104 ° F). Praten

Zoals in de meeste andere delen van Vietnam is de hoofdtaal: Vietnamees. Het lokale dialect is het zuidelijke, dat enigszins verschilt van het noordelijke dialect dat wordt gesproken in Hanoi, hoewel sprekers van beide dialecten elkaar meestal kunnen begrijpen. Er is geen belastingvrij winkelen nadat u bent geland - koop dergelijke artikelen op de luchthaven van waaruit u vertrekt om Vietnam te bezoeken. Er is een scala aan eetgelegenheden in de internationale terminal en hoewel de prijzen hoger zijn dan in Ho Chi Minh-stad (zoals het geval is met de meeste luchthavens), is het zeker mogelijk voor iedereen, behalve voor degenen met de kleinste budgetten, om betaalbaar te eten prijzen.  

Immigratie en valuta

De immigratieprotocollen op de luchthaven zijn zeer gestroomlijnd. De meeste passagiers hoeven geen immigratie- of douaneaangiftekaarten meer in te vullen. (Dit laatste kan nodig zijn als u van plan bent voor een lange periode in Vietnam te blijven, of ongebruikelijke goederen vervoert; het eerste is nodig voor een visum bij aankomst). De bagagebanden bevinden zich een niveau lager dan de immigratiecabines. U moet uw ingecheckte en handbagage laten röntgenstralen voordat u het verboden gebied verlaat.

Nadat u door de douane bent geklaard, vindt u links en rechts wisselkantoren. De munteenheid van Vietnam is de dong. Valutawisselkoersen op de luchthaven zijn concurrerend, maar vraag eerst of er een commissie is, omdat dit de kosten van het wisselen van geld verhoogt en elk tariefvoordeel teniet doet. Het is beter om hier wat geld te wisselen dan in het backpackersgebied in de stad, waar de tarieven doorgaans minder gunstig zijn. De allerbeste tarieven in de stad zijn te vinden bij geldwisselkantoor Hà Tâm, direct ten westen van de Ben Thanh-markt en geldwisselkantoor Hung Long vlak bij de wandelstraat Nguyễn Huệ. Er zijn twee geldautomaten van Citibank in de buurt van de wisselkantoren. De opnamekosten bedragen 60.000 dong. Maximale opname is 6.000.000 dong in één keer. Er is ook een andere geldautomaat tegenover die van Citibank, maar die rekent een percentage bovenop een vast bedrag, wat duurder uitpakt.

Naar het centrum gaan

Bus

Luchthavenbus nr. 109 (geel) verbindt de internationale luchthaven en het stadscentrum (Pham Ngu Lao St). Deze bus rijdt van 05:30 tot 01:30 uur van de volgende dag, met een frequentie van 15-20 minuten/rit, en de reistijd van de reis is ongeveer 45 minuten. Passagiers die vanaf Tan Son Nhat International Airport reizen, kunnen een bus nemen bij Column 15 (International Terminal) of Column 18 (Domestic Terminal). Het tarief voor de dienst is 20.000 dong voor reizen van meer dan 5 km en 12.000 dong voor reizen onder de 5 km. Bus 109 heeft verschillende voordelen zoals een lage vloer en brede deuren waardoor passagiers met volumineuze bagage, ouderen, gehandicapten en zwangere vrouwen gemakkelijk in en uit de bus kunnen stappen; grote bagageruimtes; en informatie over aankomende haltes wordt weergegeven en aangekondigd in het Engels en Vietnamees.

Om de luchthaven vanuit het stadscentrum te bereiken, gaat u naar het lokale busstation op Pham Ngu Lao St (zie Verplaatsingen > Met de bus)

Stadsbus nr. 152 (groen) is de goedkoopste manier om vanaf de luchthaven naar Pham Ngu Lao St te gaan. Ten minste enkele van deze bussen zijn nu voorzien van airconditioning. (Negeer taxichauffeurs die je vertellen dat er geen luchthavenbussen meer zijn.) Voor 6.000 dong per persoon plus een toeslag van 4.000 dong voor bagage, zet de bus je af aan de oostkant van het Pham Ngu Lao-gebied (bij het busstation aan de zuidwestkant van de rotonde Ben Thanh Market). Er is beperkte ruimte voor bagage, dus dit is misschien niet geschikt als u grote koffers heeft. Bij het verlaten van de internationale luchthaventerminal, slaat u rechtsaf en u zou de bus moeten zien wachten op de weg tegenover Burger King. Er is geen bord dat aangeeft waar de bushalte is, maar als je het aan een geüniformeerde taxichauffeur vraagt, zal hij of zij je erop wijzen. Zo niet, loop dan naar de binnenlandse terminal, die op ongeveer drie minuten lopen ligt. De bus is alleen beschikbaar tot 18:00 uur.

De luchthavenbus nr. 119 gaat naar het busstation van Mien Tay. Vanaf daar kunt u een snelbus naar Can Tho nemen.

Taxi

Als je de Grab-app gebruikt en je bestemming in de app invoert, hoeven jij en de chauffeur geen woord uit te wisselen. Dit is goedkoper dan het nemen van normale taxi's.

Voorzichtigheid: sommige reizigers hebben gemeld dat taxioplichting op de luchthaven wijdverbreid is. Om te voorkomen dat u wordt opgelicht, leest u de informatie hier en in de "Rondkomen" sectie.

Internationale terminal

Er zijn drie opties om een ​​taxi te nemen van het vliegveld naar het stadscentrum (District 1):

• Hoofdrij voor de taxi. De belangrijkste taxiwachtrij bevindt zich aan uw linkerhand als u door de hoofddeuren op de begane grond van het terminalgebouw naar buiten gaat. Sommige reizigers adviseren dat je naar de taxirij moet gaan, mensen negeren die je benaderen om taxi's aan te bieden of je adviseren om kaartjes te kopen bij balies op de luchthaven. Mai Linh en Vinasun zijn de veiligste taxibedrijven.
• Mai Linh-balie in het terminalgebouw. Het taxibedrijf Mai Linh heeft een balie aan uw rechterhand nadat u door de douane bent geklaard. U kunt daar een taxi bestellen en betalen bij de medewerker. Hij zal u dan uit het terminalgebouw naar de taxirij leiden en een Mai Linh-taxi voor u regelen. De kosten voor een reis van het vliegveld naar het stadscentrum bedragen US$10-15. Deze vergoeding dekt alle tol die mogelijk door de taxichauffeur moet worden betaald.
• Taxi's bij de binnenlandse terminal. Er zijn taxi's op de parkeerplaats van de binnenlandse terminal. Sla na het verlaten van het internationale terminalgebouw rechtsaf en loop ongeveer 200 meter.

Het taxitarief van de luchthaven naar het stadscentrum is ongeveer 140.000 dong, plus een tol van 10.000 dong. Bij minder verkeer (meestal alleen tussen 22:00-06:00 of op een warme zondagmiddag), duurt de rit naar het stadscentrum slechts 15 minuten. Meestal kruipen taxi's echter wel een uur lang in bijna stilstaand verkeer.

Binnenlandse terminal

Op de binnenlandse terminal, een bedrijf genaamd Sasco Reizen heeft de luchthaventaxi-concessie en is het enige bedrijf dat passagiers naast het gebouw mag ophalen. Hun auto's zijn de eerste die je ziet langs de stoeprand als je de douane verlaat. Minder dure rivaliserende taxi's zijn echter meestal in overvloed te vinden op 100 meter van de parkeerplaats. Ze hebben geüniformeerde taxichauffeurs die zullen proberen uw bedrijf vast te leggen als u nadert.

Taxibedrijven

Taxitarieven zijn zeer redelijk in HCMC zolang u een gerenommeerd bedrijf gebruikt en de meter wordt gebruikt. Mai Linh (groen) en Vinasun (wit met groene en rode letters) hebben de grootste vloten in de stad en zijn over het algemeen eerlijk en betrouwbaar, met meters die automatisch starten nadat de taxi's ongeveer 5 meter zijn verplaatst. Op de luchthaven dragen Mai Linh-taxiwachters groene overhemden met groene stropdassen en Vinasun-bewakers donkergroene overhemden met kastanjebruine stropdassen. Wees voorzichtig met taxi's van dubieuze bedrijven met namen die lijken op de hierboven genoemde gerenommeerde bedrijven. Sommige hiervan omvatten Meik Linh of Mai Lin in plaats van Mai Linh en Vinaleerde kennen, VinasOn of Vinasum in plaats van Vinasun. Er is gemeld dat dergelijke bedrijven buitensporige tarieven rekenen aan nietsvermoedende passagiers, soms door meters te gebruiken die sneller lopen of door het tarief handmatig te verhogen wanneer passagiers niet kijken. Er zijn ook gevallen geweest van taxichauffeurs van dergelijke bedrijven die wegreden met de bezittingen van de passagiers nog in de kofferbak.

Probeer alleen bij de bovengenoemde twee bedrijven te blijven, omdat het risico om opgelicht te worden veel groter is bij andere bedrijven.

Andere tips om oplichting te voorkomen

• Vermijd het kopen van taxicoupons van dubieuze bedrijven. Sommige taxibedrijven die teveel rekenen, hebben cabines in de terminalgebouwen van de luchthaven. Koop alleen taxibonnen van de bovengenoemde twee bedrijven.
• Vermijd taxichauffeurs. Pas op voor taxichauffeurs die zich in uniform kleden en zwaaien met gelamineerde "vaste prijs" -kaarten voor 4.400.000 dong per auto naar de stadshotels. Ze zullen bereid zijn de prijs te verlagen naar 2.600.000 dong, maar het is nog steeds afzetterij. Negeer ze en blijf bij taxi's met een meter of betrouwbare taxibedrijven.
• Vraag taxichauffeurs niet om hotels voor te stellen. Taxichauffeurs verdienen commissie door klanten naar bepaalde hotels te brengen, dus wees expliciet over naar welk hotel u precies wilt worden gebracht. Van sommige taxichauffeurs is bekend dat ze bezoekers misleiden om in hotels te blijven die ze aanbevelen door hen te informeren dat de hotels waar de bezoekers om hebben gevraagd, "geen vacatures" hebben vanwege een groot evenement in de stad of "recentelijk zijn afgebrand".

Meest bussen van particuliere reisorganisaties zet passagiers af op Pham Ngu Lao net ten westen van De Tham, waardoor je gemakkelijk toegang hebt tot accommodatie-opties in het backpackergebied. Dit betekent natuurlijk dat je ten minste 40 mensen hebt die voor dezelfde kamers winkelen, wat ontmoedigend kan zijn als de nabijgelegen plekken worden ingenomen. Geduld zal degenen belonen die dieper in de kleine steegjes graven, die een eigen leven leiden.

Als je uit de bus springt, zullen taxichauffeurs je omringen met vragen als "Waar ga je heen?" U bent misschien in de war over uw locatie in de stad en daarom zullen sommige taxichauffeurs proberen te profiteren. Je bent waarschijnlijk al in Pham Ngu Lao en als je de taxichauffeur vertelt om naar dezelfde plaats te gaan, zigzagt hij gewoon een paar blokken rond om het tarief op te drijven.

Verschillende bedrijven bieden busreizen vanuit Phnom Penh, Cambodja, voor ongeveer US $ 12 per persoon. Visa voor Vietnam kunnen niet aan de grens worden verkregen, dus zorg ervoor dat u er een hebt voordat u aankomt (zie "Omgaan met" hieronder). Capital Tours exploiteert een populaire busroute vanaf het Capital Guest House in Phnom Penh die passagiers naar de grens brengt. Na het verkrijgen van visa gaan passagiers aan boord van een Vietnamese partnerbus om hun reis naar HCMC voort te zetten.

Met de trein

Ga Sai G .nTreinstation Saigon ligt op Cach Mang Thang Tam (CMT8) ten noordwesten van het stadscentrum, en is een korte taxi- of openbare busrit verwijderd van de belangrijkste hoteldistricten. Het loket op het treinstation heeft een beperkte Engelse taalvaardigheid. Aanbevolen om te kopen bij het officiële treinkaartje op 275C Pham Ngu Lao, Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1. Andere opties zijn reisbureaus, ook in Pham Ngu Lao.

Er zijn vijf dagelijkse vertrekken van Hanoi langs de "Herenigingslijn". Hoewel verschillende treinen "express" worden genoemd, duren alle reizen ongeveer 30 tot 35 uur. De snelste trein is SE3 vertrek om 23:00 uur vanuit Hanoi en twee dagen later om 05:00 uur. Echter, SE5 met vertrek om 15:45 uur en aankomst om 04:40 uur worden toeristenrijtuigen van hogere kwaliteit gerund door het particuliere bedrijf Livitrans eraan gehecht. Rondkomen

Per taxi en huurauto

Taxi's zijn de meest comfortabele manier om rond te reizen, en zeer bescheiden in prijs in vergelijking met andere grote steden in de wereld. Tarieven fluctueren in de tijd, afhankelijk van de brandstofkosten. Verwacht ongeveer 15.000-20.000 dong per kilometer te betalen. Taxi's zijn talrijk en het is meestal niet moeilijk om er van 's morgens vroeg tot ongeveer 01:00 uur ergens in het stadscentrum een ​​te markeren, hoewel het moeilijk kan zijn om er een te vinden in de regen of tijdens de spitsuren.

Taxitarieven worden niet gereguleerd door het stadsbestuur, dus elk bedrijf bepaalt zijn eigen tariefstructuur die van tijd tot tijd verandert. U kunt niet willekeurig een taxi kiezen en een standaardtarief verwachten; het is een waarschuwing emptor markt met een randje van opportunistische drijfveren om buitenlanders te veel te laten betalen. Gelukkig is de markt redelijk competitief en wordt 80% van de taxi's geëxploiteerd door redelijk eerlijke bedrijven met vergelijkbare tarieven. De markt van deze bedrijven is voor meer dan 90% lokaal, dus hun beleid is ontworpen om het vertrouwen van de inwoners van HCMC te winnen. Over het algemeen zijn de enige taxibedrijven die u moet gebruiken: Mai Linh en Vinasun, aangezien het risico om opgelicht te worden veel groter is bij de andere bedrijven.

Oneerlijke taxichauffeurs kunnen beginnen te rijden zonder hun meter te starten en vervolgens een hoog tarief vragen of proberen te onderhandelen over een vaste prijs op een locatie waar het voor u moeilijk is om een ​​andere taxi te huren. Zorg er daarom voor dat uw taxichauffeur akkoord gaat met het gebruik van de meter en deze aanzet voordat u instapt. Zoals hierboven vermeld, hebben sommige taxibedrijven, zoals Mai Linh en Vinasun, meters in hun taxi's die automatisch starten zodra het voertuig begint te rijden. Pas ook op voor "vaste" meters.

Chauffeurs spreken over het algemeen en spreken geen vreemde talen, dus het is verstandig om de naam en het adres van uw bestemming te schrijven, bij voorkeur in het Vietnamees, om de taxichauffeur te tonen; uw hotelpersoneel kan u helpen. Het aanwijzen van de bestemming op een kaarttoepassing op uw telefoon werkt ook goed. Het helpt om een ​​van de visitekaartjes van uw hotel bij u te hebben, zodat u zonder al te veel poespas naar het hotel kunt terugkeren. Neem kleingeld en notities voor het betalen van tarieven mee, aangezien chauffeurs vaak weinig wisselgeld hebben. Taxi's zijn meestal Toyota Vios-sedans (maximaal vier passagiers) en Toyota Innova-minibusjes (maximaal zes passagiers), die in Vietnam worden geassembleerd en niet duur zijn om te kopen. De tarieven zijn bijna altijd hetzelfde, ongeacht het automodel, hoewel iets groters dan een Innova over het algemeen meer kost. Sommige oudere auto's hebben mogelijk geen werkende airconditioners.

Taxichauffeurs rijden waarschijnlijk te snel als ze de kans krijgen. Ho Chi Minh-stad heeft een uniek verkeerspatroon waarbij auto's en bussen in de middelste rijstroken rijden in tweerichtingsstraten, of de linkerrijstroken in eenrichtingsstraten, terwijl de buitenste of rechterrijstroken zijn gereserveerd voor motorfietsen. Tijdens doordeweekse spitsuren bewegen de autobanen vaak nauwelijks blokken aan een stuk, terwijl de motorbanen iets sneller bewegen. Taxichauffeurs variëren in hun neiging om zich in de motorrijstrook te wringen en voor andere auto's te springen. In theorie kunnen ze daarvoor een boete krijgen. Lange afstanden rijden op het platteland kan ook schrijnend zijn, afhankelijk van de route die u neemt. Grote wegen tussen steden zijn vaak smal, ondanks dat ze groot zijn, en zitten vol met touringcars die op snelheid zijn, langzame vrachtwagens passeren waar dat misschien niet zou moeten, en aan de rand niet veel ruimte laten voor motorfietsen.

De meeste plaatsen waar je wilt stoppen hebben parkeerwachters die je een genummerd label geven en op je fiets letten. Soms staan ​​deze parkeeroperaties onder toezicht van het etablissement dat u bezoekt, en soms zijn het freelance-operaties die worden opgezet op plaatsen waar veel mensen komen. Meestal zie je rijen fietsen geparkeerd staan. Afhankelijk van de omstandigheden kunt u de fiets zelf parkeren, of gewoon in neutraal zetten en het personeel laten positioneren. Door cyclo

Een ritje op een cyclo door HCMC is een geweldige manier om de stad te zien zoals de lokale bevolking dat doet. De bussen zijn efficiënt en snel. De meeste worden bemand door twee medewerkers: de chauffeur en een conducteur. De chauffeur houdt de bus in beweging terwijl de tariefcollector interactie heeft met de passagiers. Als je de verzamelaar je reis op je telefoon laat zien, brengen ze je het juiste tarief in rekening en geven ze aan wanneer het tijd is om uit te stappen. Locals beweren, aannemelijk, dat bussen zelfs sneller zijn dan taxi's. De reden is dat bussen informeel voorrang hebben in de straten van HCMC; wanneer een ander voertuig een bus ziet aankomen, gaat dat voertuig uit de weg. Taxi's weten dat ze moeten terugdeinzen van confrontaties met bussen. Bussen zijn ook goedkoper, 4.000-8.000 dong per rit, en veiliger dan veel van de alternatieven. Verwacht bij het in- en uitstappen van een openbare bus in Ho Chi Minh-stad niet dat deze bij de bushalte "stopt". Te voet

Het verkeer bestaat uit een duizelingwekkend aantal motorfietsen en, aangezien de invoerrechten werden verlaagd toen Vietnam toetrad tot de Wereldhandelsorganisatie, een toenemend aantal personenauto's. De naleving van verkeerslichten in HCMC is verschrikkelijk. Chauffeurs hebben de neiging om "beste oordeel" te gebruiken. Houd er echter rekening mee dat voertuigen altijd rechtsaf kunnen slaan (ongeacht de lichten). The traffic police occupy themselves with random roadside checks and do not bother motorcyclists who are running red lights or driving on the pavements. Recently police have cracked down on pedestrians, and while this does not mean that they will hassle you it's possible you will be held responsible if you are involved in an accident.

Some motorcyclists will use the footpath to get ahead of the traffic, so don't assume that the footpath is a safe place to be. Keep an eye out for cycle traffic coming up from behind.

A metro system is under construction. It had been scheduled to open in 2014, but has been plagued by massive delays, with the latest estimates putting the opening at the end of 2021 (as of Feb 2020).

Most hotels will provide a free tourist map of District 1 although these tend to be advertising-centric. The Sheraton has one of the best of these and will provide one if you ask at reception. In District 1, 'Bookazine' at #28 Dong Khoi (between Ngo Duc Ke and Ho Huan Nghiep) have larger city maps if you plan to venture beyond District 1. The one published by Du Lich & Giao Thong has a street index on the back. Fahasa Books also carries a full range of maps. They have two large stores in District 1: 185 Dong Khoi, just down from Le Thanh Ton, and 40 Nguyen Hue, just down from Mac Thi Buoi. MySherpa Travel have also published tourist maps of central District 1 with all shops and points of interest marked. Ethnic neighbourhoods

• Cholon - This is Ho Chi Minh City's Chinatown. While many of the ethnic Chinese fled Vietnam for Western countries such as Australia and the United States as a result of persecution following the Fall of Saigon, a large number of them continue to reside in the district. Many signs of the Chinese heritage can still be found in the form of Chinese clan temples, as well as stalls selling Chinese food. Many people are also bilingual in Cantonese and Vietnamese.

Doen

• Dai Nam Tourist Park, Hiệp An Ward, Thủ Dầu Một city, Binh Duong (about 40 km from HCMC; catch Bus 616 from the Ben Thanh bus station and take it all the way to the end (90 minutes, 25,000 dong as of Dec 2015), or talk to a travel agent), ☏ 84 650 3 891 389, 84 650 3 845 878. This is one of the largest tourist attractions in Vietnam. It features the Dai Nam Van Hien Temple, an entertainment site, open range zoo, shopping areas, hotels, local and Western cuisine, and the largest man-made mountain range in Vietnam. Costing over 50 billion dong to build, this park is the beginning of mass tourism in Vietnam, although it is aimed at tourists and locals, and comes highly recommended. Transport options to the park are quite convoluted. As the park is new, online information is scarce. According to the locals, it is very much worth a visit, purely just to view the temple. • Happy Ending Massage Yuan, 15B8 Le Thanh Ton St, District 1 Ben Nighe Ward (on Le Thanh Ton between Thai Van Lung and Ngo Van Nam. Across from Sky Garden), ☏ 84 8 3825 0795. Despite the name, legitimate foot and body massage, hostess will explain pricing to you at the beginning, usually offering 30% discount. 223,000 dong. 
• CGV Hùng Vương Plaza, 126 Hung Vuong St, District 5 and 60A Truong Son St, Tan Binh District, ☏ 84 1900 6017. 2 locations in HCMC and the first to offer 3D movies (at Hung Vuong Plaza only). 
• Les Rives, 98, Nguyen Hué Blvd, 3rd Floor, Room 301, District 1, ☏ 84 128 5920018. VIP speedboat tours to the Cu Chi Tunnels, the Mekong Delta and jungle canal tours around Saigon. A sunset tour around Saigon involves exploring narrow jungle canals with a village made of bamboo and thatch, as well as visiting a floating temple. 
• Twenty-Three September Park (across from Ben Thanh Market and running the length of Phan Ngu Lao St). Running along Phan Ngu Lao St are a number of parks which fill up with locals before sunset, after work. They play a variety of games which you can participate in: badminton, kicking a shuttlecock and womens group aerobics to music are all very popular, and are great to watch. If you sit down by yourself in the open area near the Ben Thanh market a number of young university age locals will come and ask to practice English with you, this is a great way to spend an evening and the best way to meet intelligent interesting youth, they will question you either individually or in groups and share with you a lot about their country. Beware of those men who want to introduce you to their "sister" who's working as a nurse and wants to move to your country. They will try to make you come into their home so you can reassure their parents, but will actually gamble and cheat at cards with you and/or ask you for money after telling a sad and fake story about some dying relative.

Shows

Ho Chi Minh City is a good place to experience traditional Vietnamese performances in a tourist-friendly way. De Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre is a popular place for tourists to watch traditional Vietnamese puppetry. For those who prefer more modern interpretations of Vietnamese culture, Lune Production stages several shows in the magnificent colonial-era Saigon Opera House, the most famous of which is the aforementioned AO Show.

Leren

• Vietnamese Language Garden, 135/10 Nguyen Cuu Van, Binh Thanh District. The school offers one-on-one study,focus on intensive classes to get fluent in Vietnamese in a short time, or 1-2 weeks classes for tourist & homes stay to experience the local lifestyle 
• Vietnamese Language Studies (on the edge of District 1 and 3 next to the HTV Broadcasting station). Private school with comprehensive courses from beginner to advanced composition. Students can take private courses or join group classes. 
• VNS University. In District 1, the University of Social Sciences has comprehensive university-style courses in Vietnamese, group classes typically 6-10 people. 

Kopen

Vietnamese arts and crafts, or mass-produced resin knock-offs thereof, are sold by dozens of shops around the central tourist district. The best, most expensive items can be mostly found on Dong Khoi or the immediate side streets. The goods tend to get progressively simpler and cheaper as you move west toward Ben Thanh Market (though the best wood-carving shop is a stall on the back side of Ben Thanh). A few shops have authentic woven silk textiles from Sapa and the north. Lacquered paintings, plates, bowls, etc., are quite striking and unique to Vietnam. Vietnamese propaganda posters can be very impressive and offer a taste of history. It is very useful to have local currency when buying. Banks and formal exchanges will provide you with a decent rate, especially when compared with agencies like Statravel on Vui Ban St which will offer much lower rates. Goldsmith shops will also change money at decent rates, though as always it is better to know the going rate than to trust to luck.

• Galerie Quynh, 65 De Tham St, District 1 (between Co Bac and Co Giang), ☏ 84 8 3836801. Tu-Sa 10:00-18:00. A serious contemporary art gallery in District 1. Unlike the galleries that focus on more decorative works, this gallery represents innovative local and international artists including Tiffany Chung, Do Hoang Tuong, Hoang Duong Cam and Sandrine Llouquet. 
• Gallery Deli, Dong Khoi (just down from Mac Thi Buoi). 
• Oil-Paintings, Bui Vien St (near the backpackers area in De Tham and Pham Ngu Lao). There are several shops along this street selling oil paintings. If you want a portrait of a Vietnamese painting or even have your own photograph oil-painted, shop around here. You can get a portrait within a day or two. 450,000-5,000,000 dong.

• Book Street (next to the post office, one block long, between Notre Dame Cathedral and the Hard Rock Cafe). Book Street has a number of book shops, both run by individual vendors and some of Vietnam’s publishing houses. You can find books in both English and Vietnamese, as well as a few other languages. Prices vary from bargain used book racks to pricy illustrated volumes hot off the press. There are two cafes on the street that are a nice stop for coffee while exploring a newly-purchased book. Kleding

Vietnamese silk is excellent quality. Buying a suit can be fun and relatively cheap, but do your research first, and remember that you get what you pay for. Labour costs are not what make suits expensive. Tailors frequently use fabrics whose quality is exaggerated, for example the common claim of wool being "Italian/English Super 180". Cheap local suits don't compare to just having an US$80 H & M suit altered by a tailor. Any suit should contain 0% polyester. Any tailor should have multiple fittings, preferably three (with the third just being a check-up that probably won't require further alteration).

Elektronica

Visiting the local electronics district on and around Huynh Thuc Khang is quite a sight, where anything and everything is repaired, and nothing wasted. It's about a 15-min ride on Bus 2 from District 1. Loudspeaker repairs and remakes, transformer and armature winding by hand. Think of any component and you may find it here, including 1968 helicopter parts. Some people bring older solid state and valve gear here to be repaired economically. Most electronics equipment in Vietnam originates here, so it's going to be a lot cheaper here than elsewhere.

While some of the country's cheapest electronics can be found here, most shops sell counterfeit items. Things such as dodgy iPods are easy to spot when compared to the genuine item, but things like camera batteries are more difficult to assess. If you are thinking about buying extra memory for your digital camera, e.g., most of the memory will be fake. These cards can be low quality and one has to ask if it is worth risking irreplaceable holiday snaps. Worse, knock-off batteries sold here have been known to explode. Nevertheless, if you know what you are doing, you can pick up some bargains.

Markten

• 10.77252106.698061 Ben Thanh Market (Chợ Bến Thành) (southwest end of Le Lai). Till 18:00. A den of thieves, but some great shopping. Ben Thanh is recognizable from its clock tower on the large roundabout. The largest old-style market in the central district, with several hundred small stalls stuffed with goods on almost impassably narrow aisles. Due to its popularity with tourists, the market is now divided between tourist goods (jeans, T-shirts, smaller souvenirs in abundance) and regular items (fruit and vegetables, rice, kitchen wares, flowers, meat, fast food and local-style pickled fruits). Most items are not price-marked, and vendors always quote a 50-100% higher price to tourists, so bargaining hard will save you money. The chief method of parting visitors from their money is ambiguity: for example, never making it quite clear how much you are being quoted or what the exact price is or what exchange rate is being used to calculate your change. Be ready for these ruses (often by a sweet, smiling young lady), or be prepared to part with more cash than you need to. At the north side (back) of Ben Thanh Market are some shops that are operated by Ben Thanh Group and they sell goods at fixed price and much cheaper than the stalls in the market. No bargaining needed. If the good selection of knock-offs here just won't do, there's plenty to be had in the surrounding side street shops or night market later. If retail warfare isn't your cup of tea, you could skip the touristy Ben Thanh altogether and go to Chợ Bình Tây. (bijgewerkt maart 2018)
• Chợ Bình Tây (in Chinatown). The underrated twin of Ben Thanh, selling everything from spices, Chinese medicines, and silk to obscure varieties of fermented fish, dried seafood, and jerky. If you are searching for a variety of Vietnam silks and velvets, skip the tourist trap Ben Thanh Market and go to Bình Tây instead. Most of Chợ Bình Tây is wholesale goods. Much of Ben Thanh Market's goods are from here. 
• Night Market (Just outside of Ben Thanh Market). 18:00-late. Here you can enjoy many kinds of different foods and drink and do your shopping as well. But it is just a small street with traffic passing and pushy sellers, not the nicest place to hang around. (bijgewerkt april 2017)
• 10.78139106.706762 Saigon Square (A stones throw from Ben Thanh Market). A good place for a visit. It is a twin of Ben Thanh but with air conditioning. Haggling your way through this place is the rule of thumb. Local middle-class Vietnamese shop here on the weekends too. Consider planning your shopping here during the day and go to Ben Thanh for the night market. The daytime Ben Thanh can be planned as a sightseeing trip instead of a shopping spree. 
• War Surplus Market, Yersin, District 1 (Intersection with Nguyen Cong Tru). Sometimes called the Amerikaanse markt or "Cho Cu" or "Khu Dan Sinh". Hidden behind rows of hardware and electric supplies shops, just brace yourself and enter. Dense warrens of stalls include those selling old American military gear of indeterminate authenticity (e.g., "nice collection of so-called authentic GI's Zippo lighter from the war era"), cheap T-shirts and military paraphernalia: just don't hope to find a genuine US wartime Zippo, they're all fakes now. Despite the name, most stalls now specialise in various industrial-type products such as hand tools and personal safety equipment. 

Supermarkten

• Co-op Mart Supermarkets (In District 1 can be found at the corner of Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Nguyen Dinh Chieu, about 1 km from the centre or in Cong Quynh, walking distance from the end of backpacker street, Pham Ngu Lao.). 07:00-22:00. Co-op Mart can be found everywhere around HCMC. Prices are reasonably lower, though the selection leans more toward Vietnamese foods. 32 stores in Ho Chi Minh City. 
• Tax Department Store (On the corner of Le Loi and Nguyen Hue.). Now known as Saigon Square. Formerly the Russian Market, this is now a rather sterile department store of sorts filled with stalls selling touristy kitsch, although the selections get better as you ascend the levels. There's a good supermarket on level 2. If you are traveling here by taxi, the new name may be met by blank expressions from taxi drivers. The old name seems to work. 
• Giant Supermarket, 506 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Ward 4 District 3, ☏ 84 8-54121416. 09:00-21:00. Part of dairy farm Hong Kong which has supermarkets all over Asia. (bijgewerkt februari 2017)

Malls and department stores

Malls and department stores selling luxury brands can be found throughout central Ho Chi Minh City. And indeed you can find most of the same goods at other malls and department stores throughout the world. Even if you are not planning on buying luxury brand items, there is a reason every visitor should know the locations of some malls and department stores: their free and meticulously clean public restrooms. Also, if you are travelling just before or during Tet, some of these establishments put up decorational impressive displays.

• Saigon Center. A mall near Ben Thanh Market, just across the street from Saigon Square. Look for the Takashimaya sign. 
• Diamond Plaza. A department store behind Notre Dame Cathedral, across the street diagonally. 
• Vincom Center. The basement and bottom few floors of the Vincom Center house a mall. It is the tall building with two rectangular towers, a block south of the Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral. 
• SC VivoCity. In District 7, a large shopping centre with a rooftop garden and a playground to keep children occupied. 

Eten

You're spoiled for choice in Saigon, which offers the country's largest variety of Vietnamese and international food. Bargains are getting harder to find, however, and restaurant prices have been rising at up to 30% per year due to a combination of higher food prices, rising wages, and soaring real estate costs. Land in the city centre now sells for around US$16,000/m², so even a modest-sized restaurant sits on real estate worth more than US$1 million. Authentic local food at bargain prices is one of the glories of Vietnam, but it's getting harder to find in Saigon as the city becomes ever more upscale and cosmopolitan.

The local food shows influences from French colonial times. Bakeries have fresh and excellent baguettes, which they will fill with cheese (typically of the "La Vache Qui Rit" or "Laughing Cow" brand), potted meat, ham, and onions, or any combination thereof, cheaply. Beef is used in various dishes - whether in any of the many variations of pho, or in a regional specialty such as "bun bo hue" or Hue beef soup. Be sure to try, aside from pho, dishes such as the above-mentioned Hue beef soup, or "banh xeo". Vietnamese savory crepes, consisting of a delicious filling of your choice (various options included bamboo shoots and enoki mushrooms, along with meat, prawns, or both) in a crispy outer crepe-like casing.

The Chinese community has also left their mark in Ho Chi Minh City, and the neighbourhood of Cholon continues to have a large number of ethnic Chinese residents, making it a natural place to go to for some Chinese food. That being said, Chinese food is fairly popular among many upper class Vietnamese, so there are also many upscale Chinese restaurants throughout the city.

Local food at bargain prices is very easy to find in Saigon. Banh mi thit (pork sandwiches) can cost as little as 10,000-15,000 dong. Com tam, a plate of rice with grilled pork (or with different meats) and a bit of vegetables for 18,000 dong.

Begroting

Food stalls are scattered all over the city, but there's a fair collection in the Ben Thanh market (see Kopen). For local fast food, try the ubiquitous Pho 24 chain (though it can be more the twice the price of local fare).

The setback of eating street food or food prepared in holes-in-the-wall in any town or city in Vietnam is dodgy hygiene. Street hawkers are not only cooks but they are also cashiers. They touch money and often flip over the notes with their fingers moistened with their saliva. If a bun or baguette is dropped in the pavement, it is picked up to be mixed with the rest. A hawker may cough or sneeze and while preparing food, cover their mouth with their bare hands then resume what they were just doing. Food may have unwanted items such as hairs. Utensils may be washed from the same portable ice-cream container washing basin, without detergent. Debris on spoons are just wiped off from the water on that small dish. Drinking glasses may just be dunked two or three times and ready for the next user.

At holes-in-the-wall, if there is shortage of counter space, contained food is placed on the floor. Floors are mostly wet and muddy. Utensils are washed on the floor itself. Waiters tossed used chopsticks and other dishes like bowls and if they don't get in the tub, they fall to the floor to be picked up later. Vegetables and meat parts are also cut in the floor and if they fell off, they are picked up again. Big quantities of vegetables are placed in plastic buckets and cleaned in the toilet tap. The plastic buckets may have been used as bathing or toilet flushing pail. And when they are not used, they may be stacked together and stored in the toilet.

However, street food and holes-in-the-wall food are flavourful, fascinating, exotic, ingeniously contrived, and cheap with all the elements of the nutrition pyramid and all the flavours: sweet; sour; salty & hot are well represented. Despite the vastly lower prices, street food is often tastier and more flavourful than the same dishes when served in the posh hotels or tourist restaurants.

• The Burger Corner, 43 Nguyen Hue St, District 1. Rice and hamburgers. The combo meals are good value. 
• Cafe India, 250 Bui Vien, District 1. 5-item menu available all day for 25,000 dong (vegetarian) or 50,000 dong with chicken. 
• Cafe Lam, 175 Bui Vien, District 1. Huge portions. USD1 for a big tiger, USD2 for a chicken curry with rice which is so large you won't finish. This is a very inconspicuous place, but most of the customers are regular expats. The food is nothing special but the prices, portions, and drink options make it a good bet. Good fruit salad, lovely smoothies and great tom yam soup. 
• Doner Kebab, 198 Bui Vien St, District 1 (Inside the backpacker area). 23,000 dong. 
• Dong Ba, 110A Nguyen Du, District 1. This is a shop that sells Tint food including Hue beef noodles and traditional banh beo rijstwafels. 
• Dream Cones, 16 Nguyen Thi Nghia St, Ben Thanh Ward, District 1. Ice cream in a quirky and cool neon atmosphere, with lots of white leather seating. Free unlimited (unsweetened) iced tea served with your ice cream. 16,000 dong a scoop. 
• The Khmer Viet Kitchen, 185/14 Pham Ngu Lau, ☏ 84 126 5492647. 07:00-23:00. Vietnamese and Western food with good selection of pasta, sandwiches, burgers and enchiladas. From 40,000 dong (vegetarian 35,000 dong), beer from 20,000 dong. 
• The Lunch Lady (Nguyen Thi Thanh), 23 Hoang Sa. 11:00-15:00. The famous Lunch Lady was featured on Anthony Bourdain's show. Different noodle dish every day. 30,000 dong. 
• Pao Restaurant & Cafe, 158 Bui Vien, District 1. Special decor with small musical instruments, traditional dress and hats from the many ethnic groups of northern Vietnam. Vietnamese food such as spring rolls, hot pot & pho. They have a live Vietnamese instrument show on every Friday and Sunday. 35,000-60,000 dong. 
• Pho Bo Vien Quoc Ky, 52 Ngo Duc Ke (near Nguyen Hué, District 1). A nice cheap place for soup. Probeer de saté version of the usual pho or my, a spicy delicacy. 
• Pho 19, 19 Nguyen Trai St, District 5. 06:00-11:00. A small space and very cheap place for pho and bo kho. 25,000-30,000 dong. 
• Pho Quynh, 323 Pham Ngu Lao St, District 1. 24 hours daily. Their specialty is pho. Locals come regularly and lucky backpackers stumble upon it. It is air-conditioned on the second and third floors. They also have decent banh mi bo kho, which is beef stew with carrots, served with French baguette. 40.000 dong. 
• Pho 24. Clean modern chain found everywhere in Ho Chi Minh City. Excellent beef noodle soup, very cheap. Watch out for the fake Pho 24/24 on Pham Ngu Lao St, which does not belong to the chain and serves terrible and expensive food. 
• Pho 2000 (3 locations, one sharing space with I Love Burger; one right next to Ben Thanh Market; and one toward the end of Le Thanh Ton St). The restaurant was once visited by a former US president, Bill Clinton. Has pho, including a seafood version, along with the usual Vietnamese rice dishes, as well as a superb vegetarian curry. 
• Thiện Duyên Bễn Thành (vegetarian restaurant), 174 Calmette (Near the city bus station), ☏ 84 8 3914 7453. Well-presented vegetarian food. 
• Trang, 102/6A Cong Quynh, District 1 (Not far from Pham Ngo Lao). Local food including excellent crab served in a friendly atmosphere.

Twee verschillende restaurants werken met dezelfde naam binnen een paar blokken van elkaar, een op Pasteur Street 160 en de andere op Nam Ky Khoi Nghia tegenover het Herenigingspaleis. Gevestigd in sfeervolle oude Franse villa's, met soortgelijke menu's Vietnamees eten, inclusief regionale specialiteiten bereid in tal van onafhankelijk bediende eetstalletjes rond de omtrek. Gelegen een beetje in het noorden en in een kleine rustige gemeenschap. De moeite waard om te voet te gaan, 20 minuten lopen van de Jade Pagoda. (bijgewerkt november 2017)

Uitspatting

• Au Lac do Brazil, 238 Pasteur (Tussen Dien Bien Phu en Vo Thi Sau.). Om te bewijzen dat Saigon alles heeft, is hier een churrascaria in Braziliaanse stijl (all-you-can-eat-restaurant met gegrild vlees), met live Latin-muziek van dinsdag tot zaterdag. Ze hebben ook een nieuwe outlet in Sky Garden II, Phu My Hung, District 7. Het is een grotere en minder drukke winkel met meestal betere service. Vanaf USD30 per persoon. 
• Co Ngu (Op Pasteur net voor Dien Bien Phu, Quan 1). Lekker Vietnamees en Aziatisch fusion-eten in een villaomgeving, met zitplaatsen binnen en in de tuin. Populair voor zakelijke groepen. Prijzen hoger dan gemiddeld voor Saigon, maar een betere waarde dan in het toeristische gedeelte van de stad. 
• Het dek Saigon, 38 Nguyen U Di, Thao Dien, An Phu, District 2 (15 min van het centrum van Saigon), ☏ 84 8 3744 6632. Het enige chique restaurant aan de oevers van de rivier. Moderne fusion keuken met lokale ingrediënten. 
• La Habana, 6 Cao Ba Quat, Quan 1 (Twee blokken ten noordoosten van het Hyatt en het operagebouw). Uitstekende Spaanse en Cubaanse gerechten, waaronder een groot tapasmenu. Ook een van de weinige plaatsen in Vietnam die echt goede cocktails maakt. 
• La Hosteria (Op Le Thanh Ton, een paar blokken ten oosten van het Hilton). Een Italiaans restaurant met uitstekende huisgemaakte pastagerechten in het assortiment van 125.000 dong en hoofdgerechten vanaf 150.000 dong. 
• Hoei Long Vien, 99 Nguyen Du (Tegenover het Herenigingspaleis). Chinese keuken waaronder Pekingeend en dim sum. Groot met een oud China thema. 
• Pomodoro's (Op Hai Ba Trung, een blok van het Hilton en om de hoek van de Sheraton en Caravelle Hotels). Fatsoenlijk klein Italiaans restaurant. Heerlijke lasagne is hun specialiteit; de pizza's zijn een beetje vettig. Diner van 2 voorgerechten, cocktails, 0,5 liter karaf wijn, hoofdgerechten en desserts voor ongeveer USD 50, maar met slechte service. 
• Tan Nami, 60-62 Dong Du, Quan 1 (Een paar deuren van Sheraton Saigon). De begane grond is in de open lucht, de bovenverdieping heeft airco. Vrij duur en middelmatig eten, ongeveer USD 10 per persoon, maar ze zullen je motor parkeren terwijl je eet en ronddwalen langs de waterkant. 
• Tempel Club, 29-31 Ton That Thiep, Q.1 (Eerste verdieping, met daaronder een ijssalon). Jaren '30-sfeer met aparte bar-, restaurant- en loungegedeeltes. Het eten is redelijk, maar de meeste mensen komen om de sfeer op te snuiven. 
• L'en Tete, 1e verdieping, 139 Nguyen Thai Binh, Quan 1 (Op de kruising met Calmette). 17:00-24:00. Uitstekend Frans restaurant in een gebied dat normaal niet wordt geassocieerd met high dining. Geweldig voor een ontspannen eetervaring. 150.000-450.000 dong. 
• ZanZBar Restaurant & Bar, 41 Dong Du St (Schuin tegenover Sheraton Hotel). Eclectisch publiek bestaande uit lokale Vietnamezen, lokale expats en bezoekende toeristen. Wijn-per-glas en cocktailkaart. 'S Nachts zorgen de verlichte zuilen voor een geweldige sfeer.

Drinken

Koffie

Vietnam is 's werelds tweede grootste exporteur van koffie na Brazilië, en cà phê is erg populair onder de Vietnamezen. Het is een paradijs voor koffieliefhebbers. De lokale stijl is sterk en zoet; sleutelwoorden om te onthouden zijn: sữa (gezoete gecondenseerde melk), á (ijs), en nóng (heet, uitgesproken als "nowm"). Cà phê đá is sterke, zoete ijskoffie; en cà phê sữa đá is hetzelfde met gecondenseerde melk. Cà phê (sữa) nóng wordt vers op uw tafel gebrouwen, gebrouwen in een klein metalen apparaat dat boven een kopje wordt geplaatst; til het gewoon op als het voldoende is afgekoeld om aan te raken (en dus te drinken). Prijzen variëren van 10.000 tot 20.000 dong voor koffie in de lokale stijl.

• Café 5 Sao, Pham Ngoc Thach (In de buurt van de schildpadvijver). Speelt luide technomuziek. Aantrekkelijk, maar pretentieus publiek. 
• Café Napoly, Pham Ngoc Thach (In de buurt van de schildpadvijver). Het decor is Romeins ruïnes-lite (ze bedoelden "Napoli"), maar het menu is typerend voor een luxe Vietnamees café: koffie, fruitdranken, ijs en een eenvoudig menu met eieren en rijstgerechten. Achtergrondmuziek is leuk, niet te luid overdag (hoewel luider 's nachts), de prijzen zijn redelijk. Buitenterras aan de voorzijde, aircogedeelte op de begane grond en avondloungebar op de bovenverdieping. Naast het luidere, meer trendy en mogelijk pretentieuze Cafe Nam Sao.

• Oude Saigon-koffie, 2e verdieping, 63 Dong Du St, District 1 (Tegenover het Sheraton). Doet denken aan HCMC in het verleden. Het heeft een geweldig uitzicht op Dong Khoi Street. Alle drankjes en etenswaren zijn typisch Saigon. Het personeel is heel behoorlijk. 
• Regina Koffie, 84 Nguyen Du St, District 1. Vietnamese koffie of cappuccino. Ze hebben een bekwame Japanse espressomeester die weet hoe hij koffie moet zetten. Frans gemengd met Aziatisch design met bakstenen muren. Het wordt verkocht aan toeristen en alle opbrengsten gaan naar de kerk om de hoek. 
• Trung Nguyen (Twee handige verkooppunten bevinden zich aan de oostkant van Nguyen Hue, vlak voor de People's Committee Hall, en de hoek van Thu Khoa Huan en Ly Tu Trong). De Vietnamese versie van Starbucks, maar met veel betere koffie. Ze hebben vestigingen door de hele stad, maar zijn niet goed vertegenwoordigd in het hart van het toeristendistrict. Prijzen beginnen rond de 40.000 dong voor een eenvoudige cuppa, hoewel er tal van variaties zijn, waaronder de beruchte wezel koffie (cà phê chồn), gemaakt van koffiebonen verzameld uit civet-uitwerpselen; een snelle Google-zoekopdracht over de omstandigheden waarin de civetkatten worden bewaard, kan echter sommigen ervan weerhouden om monsters te nemen. 

Alcohol

Saigon heeft genoeg plekken om te drinken, hoewel Vietnamezen en buitenlanders tot op zekere hoogte op verschillende plaatsen rondhangen. Er zijn andere nachtclubs die zich bijna uitsluitend richten op het jonge Vietnamese publiek. Overal in de stad vind je Vietnamese bierflesjes die open blijven tot 03:00-04:00. Verschillende bars in Phu My Hung blijven open tot 02:00-03:00.

Niet te missen zijn de stoepbars die erg druk zijn met zowel de lokale bevolking als reizigers, ongeveer halverwege Biu Vien. Ze verkopen flessen Saigon-bier voor 10.000 dong. Ga op de kleine plastic stoelen zitten en geniet van de vriendelijke sfeer. Dit zijn misschien wel de beste plekken om te drinken als backpacker, omdat ze erg goedkoop zijn en ook geweldige plekken om mensen te ontmoeten, en niet alleen andere toeristen.

Many of Saigon's historical hotels are in the hands of Saigontourist, the former state monopoly. In general, Ho Chi Minh City is a safe city, with violent crimes such as armed robbery being relatively rare. The most common crimes faced by tourists are pickpocketing and snatch theft from motorbikes.

Scam artists operate on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City. A person will strike up a friendly conversation claiming they've either seen you at the airport or some other tourist place where they work. Usually they'll be with other family members who will join the conversation very naturally and once they find out where you're from they'll mention that another family member is moving to a city in your country. You will be invited over for food at their house to help console a worried grandmother or to give advise to their family member. Once you arrive at the house however the family member is not there, or the grandmother has suddenly fallen ill and had to go to the hospital. You'll be presented with various business opportunities, legal or not, or asked for financial support for the suddenly sick grandmother.

Hotel scams are very common, even in the mid-range price level US$20-70. The hotel will remind you that you should place your valuables in the room safe or the hotel safe. Lock up everything that is more or less valuable.

Don't hold up expensive things near the street or leave them out on the table while you're having a meal, especially in District 1, especially around the backpacker area. Petty theft is a big problem, and a lot of times it's done by people on motorbikes. It's easy to prevent by not giving thieves the opportunity.

Don't buy SIM card before the immigration at the airport, they will charge you US$10 for a SIM card. After immigration and baggage area, you can find sim card booth. They sell SIM card for $6 only.Don't buy coconut more than ~USD2, real-price is ~USD0.5. If you are forced, call police: ☏ 84 8 3829 7643, 84 8 38299835. A favorite trick is for the vendors to strike up a conversation with you, let you hold the carrying-stick, take a picture, and while you're distracted open a coconut for you that you really didn't ask for.

Also, the prostitutes on Bui Vien and Ton That Tung will try to rob you. Usually, they'll approach men acting like they're up to normal prostitute business, but they are to pickpocket.

Free Wi-Fi access is provided at nearly all hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and cafés. You can find open access points that don't require a password throughout the area around Pham Ngu Lao/Vu Bien and Ben Thanh Market.

It is also possible to buy a SIM card with unlimited internet access for a month directly at the airport for about 300,000 dong. If you can wait until you reach the city, shops with a turquoise Viettel sign will sell you a SIM-Card (Nano-SIM available) for anywhere upwards of 50,000 dong. That includes a sufficient amount of free calling, SMS and 2GB of data for one month.

To get a visa or modify one, you may be able to get it done, or may have to ask a travel agent. Typical cost for a visa extension of one month is USD10, 5 working days delay (they keep the passport). You need to fill form N14/M with your details and the one of your sponsor, either a hotel or private house and get a stamp from the police station corresponding to its location. This point could be tricky as it implies that you have register at the police station before. If not, expect extra delay (5 or more days, for example) or cost. Quick processing (2 days) is possible, but you need to justify it. Going through travel agents costs about USD30, but they manage the police stamp whatever your situation is (extra fee of USD20 for quick processing). Other prices: single entry visa USD25, multiple-entry USD50-100, change single-entry visa to multiple-entry for 6 months USD25-75, modification/extension of visa USD10. This office will tell you that you must use an agent if you wish to extend a tourist visa.

If you need to lodge a complaint, for example, about a stolen object, go to a police station. For a stolen item, you need to report to a station near the theft. It can be tricky as small stations will probably not have an officer with very good English language skills. If possible, go with a Vietnamese speaker.

When going to the airport, specify clearly which terminal you want to go to. International flights leave from the newer international terminal (go straight). Domestic flights (to Da Nang, Hanoi, Nha Trang, and so on) are from the domestic terminal (turn left). If you get dropped off at the wrong terminal, you'll have to dash to the correct terminal via a pedestrian walkway link 600 m away. This is not recommended, especially if you're already late for boarding.

When entering the airport, taxi drivers will add an airport entry fee of 5,000 dong to your total metered fare. This is not to be confused with the airport departure tax, which should have been included in the price of your airline ticket.

If you're booking a bus around the Pham Ngu Lao area, you probably want to consider buying the tickets right at the bus company instead of one of the booking agencies. The FUTA bus line has an office at the corner Pham Ngu Lao / De Tham (orange-green building) and you get the tickets for around two-thirds the price compared to booking in an agency.

Avoid booking trips through your hotel as you'll pay a significant surcharge to join the same trips which can be booked at the plethora of travel agents throughout the city.

• Can Gio - the virgin mangrove forest 30 km south of the city. Entrance to the park is near Ca Cam Bridge.
• Kan dat? is the biggest city of the Mekong Delta and famous for its floating market, delicious food, and fresh fruits. The name comes from "cầm thi giang", river of poems. The city is also referred to as "Tay Do" meaning "Western capital". Can Tho is 169 km (3 hr) from Ho Chi Minh City. You can get tickets at Le Hong Phong in district 3 and take a free shuttle bus to Ben Xe Mien Tay, where the air conditioned buses leave. Tickets to Can Tho cost around 100,000 dong. Free shuttle buses in Can Tho will take you directly to your hotel.
• Cu Chi Tunnel - day-trips are tirelessly flogged by travel agencies around Pham Ngu Lao, and can be done as a half-day trip, or as a full-day with a stop at Tay Ninh to see the Holy See of the Cao Dai religie. Tours, including admission, should cost 70,000-110,000 dong, and are available every day of the week. Cu Chi tunnels are about a 1.5-hr drive out of HCMC centre. It's worth taking the trips to see these amazing structures so cleverly carved underground and used for survival during wartime. One way to get to the tunnels is by speedboat.
• Dalat - popular temperate mountainside "European" escape. Consider going via Cat Tien National Park to see wildlife (including primates, rare birds, and crocodiles) and spectacular jungle scenery.
• Mekongdelta - boat tours are available with an almost infinite mix of itineraries. They can be short overnight trips, leisurely meanders over several nights. A two- or three-day Mekong tour is worthwhile; expect to be shuffled between tour companies along the way. 2-day, 1-night organized trips to the Mekong Delta can cost as little as $US25, including transportation, tour guides, lodging and several meals.
• Mui Ne - popular beach resort about 4-6 hr away by bus
• Nha Trang - beach destination reachable by overnight train
• Tay Ninh - Cao Dai Holy See and Ba Den mountain.
• Vung Tau - city with good beaches, about 2 hr away by bus, or less by boat along the Saigon River. The boat journey costs 250,000 dong.
• Phnom Penh - a 6-hr bus journey to the capital of Cambodia ranges from US$10–12 (210,000-252,000 dong). When you pass into Cambodia and the bus stops for 15 min. Do not buy anything from the roadside cafe. Instead, cross the road to purchase drinks or food from the roadside shops, because prices can be up to 50% cheaper than the bus stop cafe. Alternatively you could book a tour with boat and bus, which will have you spending a night in a cheap hotel in Chau Doc before making the trip over the border (cross-border package prices may include visa support, which should cost 360,000-530,000 dong).
