Cambridge is een universiteitsstad in Cambridgeshire in Engeland. Het is een stad van krokussen en narcissen op de rug, van groene open ruimtes en grazend vee op slechts 450 meter van het marktplein. Koeien dwalen soms het marktgebied in, omdat ze niet omheind zijn. Het Cambridge van Brooke, Byron, Newton en Rutherford, van de zomeridylle van punters, 'hobbels', koele wilgen en May Balls is de moeite waard.
Begrijpen
Cambridge roept veel beelden op: het adembenemende uitzicht op King's College Chapel vanaf de overkant van de rivier de Cam, de rijke complexiteit van de gotische architectuur, studenten die fietsen naar colleges en luie zomerse puntertjes op de rivier de Cam.
Cambridge slaagt erin zijn rol als historische stad te combineren met een wereldberoemde universiteit en, sinds de 20e eeuw, een internationaal erkend kenniscentrum voor technologie en wetenschap. De Universiteit van Cambridge werd in 1209 opgericht door geleerden die vertrokken Oxford na een geschil met stedelingen. Ze kozen het rustige stadje Cambridge als geschikte locatie om te studeren. In de 17e eeuw leidde Cambridge University veel van de oprichters op van een Amerikaanse universiteit genaamd Harvard, die ook in een plaats staat genaamd Cambridge (vernoemd naar de Engelse universiteit). Cambridge University heeft veel beroemde alumni, waaronder: wiskundigen zoals Sir Isaac Newton, wetenschappers zoals Stephen Hawking en Charles Darwin, filosofen zoals Bertrand Russell en Ludwig Wittgenstein, en schrijvers zoals John Milton en Lord Byron. Het was de plaats van het baanbrekende werk van Rutherford op het gebied van kernfysica en het DNA-werk van Crick en Watson (zie de Eagle-pub hieronder). Cambridge academici hebben meer Nobelprijzen gewonnen dan die van enige andere universiteit ter wereld. Het gerucht dat slechts één universiteit, Trinity, meer Nobelprijswinnaars had dan Frankrijk, is echter onjuist.
De stad is aan alle kanten omringd door historische dorpen, steden en oude monumenten (zoals Ely en Peterborough), allemaal op korte reisafstand. Net als Oxford werd Cambridge gespaard van de Duitse tapijtbombardementen die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog veel andere Britse steden verwoestten, en is dus een van de best bewaarde middeleeuwse steden in het VK
Meer dan 6 miljoen bezoekers komen elk jaar naar Cambridge om te genieten van de geneugten van de historische stad. De stad zelf is vrij compact met veel van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden op loopafstand. Cambridge is een ideale uitvalsbasis voor het verkennen van enkele van de zachtste (lees vlakste; goed voor ontspannen wandelingen, slecht voor heuvels met uitzichtpunten) en meest ongerepte landschappen in Engeland.
Stap in
Cambridge ligt slechts 80 km ten noorden van Londen. Met goede treinverbindingen en wegverbindingen is Cambridge gemakkelijk bereikbaar, of u nu met de auto of met het openbaar vervoer reist.
Met het vliegtuig
Cambridge ligt binnen handbereik van sommige, maar niet alle internationale luchthavens van Londen.
Luchthaven Londen Stansted (STN IATA) ligt op 48 km afstand en biedt regelmatige bus- en treindiensten naar Cambridge. Rechtstreekse treindiensten vertrekken elk uur (naar Birmingham New Street) en duurt ongeveer 35 minuten met een retourtarief van £ 16,00. Voor frequentere diensten neemt u de Stansted Express naar Londen vanaf perron 1 en stapt u over bij Bishops's Stortford of Stansted Mountfitchet, dit duurt ongeveer 50 minuten. Treindiensten zijn mogelijk niet beschikbaar als uw vlucht heel laat in Stansted aankomt of heel vroeg op de dag vertrekt, en hoewel de luchthaven graag reclame maakt voor uurdiensten, zijn er enkele vreemde gaten in de dienstregeling, dus controleer de borden voordat u een kaartje koopt, en ga naar het busstation als er niets zinnigs in de aanbieding is. Bussen van National Express rijden tussen Cambridge en Stansted (ook 's avonds laat) en doen er ongeveer 50 minuten over voor prijzen vanaf £ 12. Abacus Airport Cars Cambridge rijdt er vanaf £47 enkele reis.
Luchthaven Luton (LTN IATA) is het beste te bereiken met National Express Coach, die ongeveer 1 uur en 40 minuten duurt met prijzen vanaf ongeveer £ 26, maar deze rijden slechts om de 2 uur of zo.
De luchthavens Londen Stansted en Londen Luton bieden veel van de goedkoopste internationale vluchten die in Europa te vinden zijn, met veel van de grote goedkope Europese luchtvaartmaatschappijen zoals Easyjet, Ryanair, Jet2 en TUIfly met een hub op een van deze twee luchthavens.
Luchthaven Londen Gatwick (LGW IATA) heeft nu een rechtstreekse Thameslink-treindienst per uur naar Cambridge en duurt ongeveer 1 uur en 55 minuten met een enkele reis van £ 35,50. Als alternatief is er voor twee extra diensten per uur een overstap nodig tussen London St Pancras en het aangrenzende London King's Cross. Gatwick is de minst handige luchthaven van Londen met de auto, aangezien het aan de andere kant van Londen ligt, een rondleiding over de M25 Londense ringweg vereist en ongeveer 3 uur duurt. Abacus Airport Cars Cambridge rijdt er vanaf £ 100 enkele reis. Er is een National Express-busdienst beschikbaar, opnieuw rond 3 uur (en die M25 weer).
Luchthaven Londen Heathrow (LHR IATA) is 90-120 minuten rijden met de auto, afhankelijk van het verkeer.
National Express-bussen van en naar het centrale busstation van Heathrow doen er ongeveer 2 around uur over met prijzen vanaf £ 36 (september 2019).
Met de trein zijn er twee opties, die beide ongeveer 2 uur duren:
- Neem de Heathrow Express vanaf Heathrow Railstation bij Terminals 2 & 3 (er zijn geen extra kosten voor transfer tussen Terminals 4 & 5 naar Terminals 2 & 3) naar London Paddington (PAD), deze dienst vertrekt ongeveer elke 15 minuten. Neem vanuit London Paddington de metro (Hammersmith and City-lijn of Circle-lijn) naar London Kings Cross (LGX) en neem vervolgens de trein naar Cambridge (CBG). De totale kosten bij boekingen van meer dan 3 maanden van tevoren moeten minder zijn dan £ 20 enkele reis en £ 30 retour. Als u kaartjes voor de Heathrow Express aan boord of op de luchthaven koopt, verwacht dan £ 35 enkele reis en £ 55 retour te betalen. Deze manier van reizen vermindert de tijd die op de buis wordt doorgebracht tot minder dan 15 minuten, wat aan te raden is tijdens de piekuren van de buis (7AM-9AM, 4PM-6PM).
- Neem de metro (Piccadilly-lijn) vanaf London Heathrow underground Terminals 2,3,4 of 5 naar London Kings Cross (LGX) of (bij Holborn overstappen op Central Line) naar London Liverpool Street (LST). Neem vanaf daar de trein naar Cambridge (CBG). Tarieven van Kings Cross £ 25,10 enkele reis en £ 38,70 daluren; van Liverpool street £ 18,90 daluren single en £ 27,50 daluren retour. Het tarief voor de daluren met de metro tussen Heathrow en het centrum van Londen is £ 3,10 met contactloos Deze manier van reizen is de goedkoopste methode per trein, maar omvat ongeveer 1 uur reizen met de metro, wat niet aan te raden is tijdens de spitsuren van de metro (7AM-9AM, 4PM- 18.00 uur).
Abacus Airport Cars naar Cambridge kosten £ 85,00 enkele reis.
Luchthaven Londen City (LCY IATA) is het best te bereiken met de trein naar King's Cross of Liverpool Street als Heathrow, dan Underground en Docklands Light Railway door Londen (buis/DLR-tarief £ 2,80 daluren single met contactloos). Abacus Airport Cars Cambridge rijdt er vanaf £ 77 enkele reis.
Cambridge heeft een eigen luchthaven - Internationale luchthaven Cambridge (CBG IATA) - aan de oostelijke rand van de stad; het is 10 minuten van het historische centrum. Het heeft echter geen lijnvluchten meer.
Met de trein

Er rijden reguliere treinen van Londen (koningskruis en Liverpool Street) naar Cambridge. De snelste "Cambridge Cruiser"-diensten van en naar King's Cross rijden non-stop en duren minder dan 50 minuten, meestal om 15 en 45 minuten na het hele uur. "Semi-snelle" diensten stoppen bij een paar tussenstations en duren ongeveer 65 minuten, langzamere treinen kunnen tot 90 minuten duren. Probeer te vermijden een trein te nemen met meer dan 8 haltes tussen Cambridge en London King's Cross om de langzaamste treinen te vermijden. Treinen van en naar London Liverpool Street duren allemaal ongeveer 75 minuten. Als je super daltickets koopt, zijn dit de goedkoopste die beschikbaar zijn, voor £ 13 retour per dag. Rechtstreekse treinen van de luchthaven van Stansted naar Cambridge duren 35 minuten (vanaf Stansted in de richting van Birmingham). Omdat Cambridge een van de belangrijkste knooppunten van het spoorwegnet van East Anglia is, rijden er ook treinen van en naar Ipswich, Norwich, Peterborough en Birmingham. Zien Nationale Spoorwegen voor informatie over dienstregelingen en tarieven.
U kunt een overnachting kopen Spoor en zeil ticket van Cambridge naar overal in de Nederland voor ongeveer £ 80, met behulp van de veerbootroute Harwich-Hook of Holland. Zorg ervoor dat u het juiste ticket kiest, maar u kunt deals vinden die de veerboot dekken (inclusief een kamer en bed) en reizen tussen Cambridge naar elk station in Nederland. Vertrek vanuit Cambridge is om ongeveer 19.00 uur; als je de andere kant op gaat, kom je iets voor 10.00 uur aan. (Er zijn ook veerboten overdag, maar door de dienstregeling kunt u geen treinverbinding maken.)
1 Cambridge treinstation Cambridge ligt ongeveer 2 km ten zuiden van het stadscentrum; er rijden regelmatig bussen naar de stad en er is een taxistandplaats buiten het station. Het station heeft een bemand reiscentrum, zelfbedieningskaartautomaten (velen nemen alleen Europese smartchipkaarten en accepteren geen contant geld) en automatische ticketbarrières (je hebt je ticket nodig om beide in en buiten het station). Let op bij het kopen van kaartjes, want er staat vaak een rij bij de automaten en geen bij de loketten. Er zijn ook geldautomaten, verschillende cafés en een boekhandel, op het platform dat alleen toegankelijk is voor kaarthouders, en een mini-supermarkt in de stationshal. Het station is erg lang, met verschillende treinen die van begin tot eind op het hoofdperron geparkeerd staan, dus het kan zijn dat je een heel eind moet lopen tussen de treinen als je een nauwe verbinding hebt.
2 Treinstation Cambridge Noord is gelegen in het noordoosten van de stad en wordt bediend door treinen van en naar Londen, Kings Lynn en Norwich. Dit station is handig voor het Cambridge Science Park, maar er zijn weinig toeristische bezienswaardigheden in dit deel van de stad.
Per cyclus
Cambridge is zeer goed bereikbaar per fiets en de lokale overheid stimuleert duurzaam reizen (zoals wandelen en fietsen). National Cycle Network-routes 11 en 51 lopen beide door de stad en Cambridge heeft ook een uitgebreid lokaal fietsnetwerk. Binnen de stad is fietsen een veelgebruikt vervoermiddel. Fietsen kunnen worden gehuurd bij een aantal verkooppunten, waaronder Station Cycles (net ten noorden van het treinstation), de centrale vestiging van Station Cycles (gelegen op verdieping -1 van het winkelcentrum Grand Arcade) en bij City Cycle Hire (aan de westelijke rand van het stadscentrum, in de buitenwijk Newnham).
Enkele korte opmerkingen over fietsetiquette: fietsen op de stoep (trottoir) is over het algemeen niet toegestaan, tenzij er een specifiek aangegeven fietspad voor gedeeld gebruik is; fietsen op de weg is altijd toegestaan, ook als er een gedeelde rijstrook is (maar dit kan automobilisten ergeren). Eenrichtingsstraten zijn van toepassing op fietsen, tenzij er een fietspad is om in de tegenovergestelde richting te rijden. Respecteer rode verkeerslichten en gebruik altijd fietsverlichting in het donker. Als u zonder licht wordt betrapt, kunt u ter plaatse een boete van £ 30 krijgen. Houd u aan de regels, zelfs als vele anderen ze overtreden.
Met de auto
Parkeren kan moeilijk zijn in het centrum van Cambridge (de beste parkeerplaats, als je bereid bent te betalen, is in de Grand Arcade in het centrum van de stad) en het eenrichtingsverkeer is buitengewoon verwarrend. De Raad beveelt het gebruik van de "Park and Ride"-regeling aan (£ 1 voor parkeren en £ 2,70 retourbustarief).
- Cambridge is voornamelijk verbonden met Londen via de M11 of de A10.
- Kom vanuit het noorden van de A1 de A14 op.
- Vanuit West- en Noordwest-Londen en Hertfordshire, de A1(M) en A505 via Letchworth en Hitchin is een redelijk snelle alternatieve route die de M25 vermijdt (vooral tijdens de spits).
- De A421/A428 is ook het overwegen waard als u rijdt vanaf Milton Keynes en Bedford.
Met de bus
Nationale Express biedt busverbindingen naar grote steden in het hele land, waaronder directe verbindingen naar Londen Victoria en Birmingham, evenals frequente luchthavenbussen naar Luton, Stansted, Heathrow en Gatwick. National Express-bussen vertrekken vanaf Parkside, naast Parker's Piece park, ongeveer 800 meter van het stadscentrum. Veel diensten stoppen ook bij de Trumpington en Madingley Road Park and Ride-locaties.
Het busstation voor bussen voor kortere afstanden bevindt zich aan Drummer Street, gunstig gelegen ten opzichte van alle belangrijke bezienswaardigheden. Postkoets exploiteren routes van Cambridge naar Bedford, Ely, Peterborough (via een verbinding bij Chatteris), Newmarket, Saffron Walden, Bury St Edmunds en Oxford.
Verschillende bus- en touringcarbedrijven (met name Stagecoach en Whippet Coaches) exploiteren diensten binnen Cambridge en de omgeving, en daarom zijn tickets voor één bedrijf mogelijk niet geldig op busroutes die door andere bedrijven worden geëxploiteerd. De service is notoir onregelmatig en het is het beste om ongeveer de helft van de tijd opnieuw te verlaten voor een reis, aangezien de bussen vaak vertraagd/geannuleerd/langzaam zijn, en als er een dringende verbinding moet worden gemaakt, kunnen ze het beste worden vermeden, vooral de "citi " merkbussen: loop of neem een taxi.
Rondkomen
- Dus de agent trekt een elektron over de stadsring: 'Besef je dat je precies de halve snelheid van het licht deed?'
- "Oh geweldig", zegt het elektron, "nu ben ik verloren" - intellectuele schoolgrap
Cambridge is grotendeels voetgangersvriendelijk: de meeste bezienswaardigheden zijn gemakkelijk te bereiken te voet en een groot deel van het centrale gebied is verkeersvrij. Een deel van de trottoirs wordt gedeeld door voetgangers en fietsers; dit kan je betrappen, tenzij je er op let. Cambridge wandelroutes kunnen online worden gepland met de walkit.com wandelrouteplanner. Studenten en lokale bewoners gebruiken vaak fietsen om zich te verplaatsen en een fiets huren[dode link] is een levensvatbaar alternatief voor gewoon lopen.
Je kunt ook kiezen voor een hop-on, hop-off open-top sightseeing bus die commentaar geeft in verschillende talen. De sightseeingbus passeert het treinstation, de Amerikaanse begraafplaats en veel van de historische colleges, maar omdat het stadscentrum autovrij is, kan het de meer centrale colleges alleen op zondag bereiken.
Het is weinig nodig om de lokale te gebruiken busdiensten tenzij u in een verafgelegen deel van de stad verblijft, maar ze zijn schoon en efficiënt als dat nodig is. Citi-bussen kosten tussen £ 1 en £ 2 voor individuele contante tarieven binnen Cambridge City (wisselgeld wordt gegeven, maar chauffeurs kunnen grote coupures weigeren), maar vertel de chauffeur gewoon uw bestemming terwijl u instapt en neem uw ticket uit de automaat. Een dagpas kost £ 4,50 voor Cambridge City en Park and Ride-services of £ 7,00 voor de omgeving.
Cambridge City Council ontmoedigt autogebruik. De parkeertarieven zijn hoog en de stad kent een systeem van: stijgende bolders die voertuigen met de juiste transponders (bijv. taxi's, bussen, hulpvoertuigen) doorlaten, maar ernstige schade kunnen toebrengen aan de bumpers van andere voertuigen, vaak tot op het punt dat ze worden afgeschreven.
Uber-ritten zijn beschikbaar en er zijn veel taxibedrijven in Cambridge.
Zien
hogescholen
Focus op architectuur Cambridge, vooral de verschillende hogescholen en universiteitsgebouwen, is fascinerend voor mensen met een interesse in architectuur. De colleges zijn door de eeuwen heen sporadisch gebouwd en het resultaat is een mix van stijlen zowel oud als modern. Hoewel de moderne architectuur soms controversieel is, vooral in hoe de nieuwere gebouwen (niet) harmoniëren met aangrenzende oudere gebouwen, is het op zijn manier net zo interessant als de oudere. Een rondleiding langs de achterkant (zie hierboven) geeft de bezoeker een goed gevoel voor de verschillende stijlen en een paar kleine omleidingen dragen bij aan de beleving. Een voor de hand liggend herkenningspunt is de toren van de Universiteitsbibliotheek. De bibliotheek is ontworpen door Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, die ook de Bankside Power Station in Londen heeft gebouwd, nu het Tate Modern. Het heeft een zeer industriële uitstraling, misschien daardoor. Aan de andere kant van de bibliotheek kunnen nieuwsgierigen zien Robinson College, de nieuwste universiteit en gebouwd rond 1980 en een van de weinige stukken moderne architectuur in Cambridge zonder noemenswaardige oude gebouwen in de buurt. Als je liever een mix van oud en nieuw ziet, is het de moeite waard om naar Homerton College, dat is een kwartier lopen op Hills Road. Homerton College is bijzonder interessant omdat er voorbeelden zijn van verschillende architectuurstijlen op het terrein, zoals de neo-Georgische gebouwen aan de voorkant van het college en de gotische Victoriaanse hal aan de binnenkant van het college. Dit is een uitstekende plek om een wandeling te maken door het terrein dat een oude boomgaard, waterpartijen en zelfs een kleine honingboerderij omvat, om de architectuur van ver te waarderen. Sint-Janscollege en Magdalena College hebben ook een aantal architectonische hoogstandjes. Net als de Brug van zuchten, St John's heeft gebouwen in bijna elke architectuurstijl, beginnend met de 16e-eeuwse zaal in First Court en eindigend met het uiterst moderne Cripps-gebouw. In de buurt van het Cripps-gebouw bevindt zich ook het dramatische New Court, gebouwd in het begin van de 19e eeuw en de School van Pythagoras, een van de oudste gebouwen in Cambridge die dateert uit het begin van de 13e eeuw. Het naastgelegen Magdalene College - kenners weten dat Magdalene toegankelijk is vanaf de achterkant van het Cripps-gebouw - is nogal een contrast. In tegenstelling tot St John's, dat voornamelijk bestaat uit gebouwen die oorspronkelijk zijn ontworpen als studentenhuisvesting, heeft Magdalene een aantal oude vakwerkherbergen omgebouwd tot een deel van de accommodatie. Magdalena bezit ook de Lutyens gebouw ontworpen door Sir Edwin Lutyens en de Pepys gebouw. Deze laatste, waarin de Pepys-bibliotheek is gehuisvest, heeft een imposante en bijna symmetrische gevel en ziet er vanaf de achterzijde totaal anders uit. Het lelijkste Magdalene-gebouw, het Buckingham Court uit de jaren 70, is gelukkig goed verborgen, terwijl aan de overkant van de rivier de Magdalene Quayside-ontwikkeling (1990) een uitstekend voorbeeld is van hoe de late-eeuwse architecten subtiliteit en harmonie lijken te hebben geleerd. Quayside is een uitstekende plek om een punter te huren. De Cambridge 2000 website heeft een lijst van 100 gebouwen die om de een of andere reden een opmerkelijke architectuur hebben. |
Cambridge University bestaat uit een aantal semi-onafhankelijke colleges, waarvan vele centraal, sommige tot 3 mijl van het stadscentrum (traditioneel gemeten vanaf de Great St. Mary's kerk). De volgende zijn een goede selectie voor sightseeing. De meeste hogescholen in het centrale gebied zijn een kijkje waard, als je de tijd hebt.
Sommige hogescholen vragen entree. Het kan duur zijn, ongeveer £ 5 per persoon of meer. Als je bevriend bent met een student, mogen ze gratis een bezoeker binnenlaten. Hogescholen zijn doorgaans gesloten voor bezoekers tijdens de universitaire examenperiode, eind mei en de eerste week van juni.
Vergeet niet om respectvol te zijn bij het bezoeken van de hogescholen. Het zijn studentenhuizen voor een groot deel van het jaar, en de werkdruk en druk op de universiteit kan enorm zijn. Ga geen gebouwen binnen waarvoor je niet expliciet bent uitgenodigd, kijk niet in de ramen van mensen en wees beleefd bij het maken van foto's; wees vooral discreet in de bibliotheken. Onthoud altijd dat de rol van de hogescholen in de eerste plaats die van academische instellingen is; ze zijn er niet voor toeristen, en het is onbeleefd om iets te doen dat de mensen die er wonen en werken hindert of hindert.

- 2 Queens' College, Silver Street/Queens' Lane, ☏ 44 1223 335511. Open van 10.00 tot 16.30 uur, zie website of bel voor actuele tijden. Gesloten van half mei tot half juni. Opgericht door twee koninginnen - Margaretha van Anjou in 1448 en Elizabeth Woodville in 1465, strekt het College zich uit over beide zijden van de Cam, verbonden door de beroemde Wiskundige brug. De mythe gaat dat het werd ontworpen door Isaac Newton zonder het gebruik van pennen, schroeven, moeren of bouten, maar toen het werd gedemonteerd, konden de jongens en studenten er niet achter komen hoe ze het weer in elkaar moesten zetten. Dit is helaas onjuist, de brug dateert uit 1749, 22 jaar na de dood van Newton. De prachtige middeleeuwse Oude Zaal is ook een bezoek waard. £ 3 (inclusief gedrukte gids). Gratis half oktober tot half maart.
- 3 Trinity College. Grote aantrekkelijke binnenplaats en bibliotheek ontworpen door Sir Christopher Wren. Het interieur van de Wren Library (MF 12.00-14.00, za 10.30-12.30 uur in Full Term) is bijzonder mooi en bevat middeleeuwse bijbels, voorwerpen uit het bezit van Isaac Newton, originele manuscripten van Wittgenstein, een Winnie-the- Pooh-manuscript door AA Milne, en aantekeningen van onder meer Bertrand Russell. Zelfs als het college gesloten is voor bezoekers, is de bibliotheek mogelijk nog steeds toegankelijk vanaf Queens Road aan de andere kant van de rivier de Cam. £ 2

Dit college, voorheen het St Johns Hospital (13e eeuw) voordat het in 1511 werd heropgericht als een college, herbergt het oudste academische gebouw in Cambridge (de "School of Pythagoras"). - 9 Sint-Catharinacollege. St Catharine's College werd in 1473 opgericht door Robert Wodelarke, Provost van King's College. Het college werd gedoopt ter ere van de patroonheilige van het leren en stond vroeger bekend als Katharine Hall. Het werd grotendeels herbouwd in de 17e eeuw en in 1673 begon het werk aan het hoofdhof; de kapel werd voltooid in 1704. Ondanks zijn bescheiden omvang is het driezijdige bakstenen hoofdgebouw van de universiteit bijna uniek onder de colleges van Cambridge en verdient het een korte stop tijdens een wandeling door Trumpington Street. - 10 Homerton College. - 11 Corpus Christi College, Corpus Christi College, Trumpington St, CB2 1RH. Uniek, opgericht door Cambridge-inwoners (van twee stadsgilden). De Old Court (links van de hoofdingang, achter de St Bene't's kerk) dateert uit de jaren 1350 en is de oudste binnenplaats in Cambridge. - 15 Jezus Groen. Jesus Green werd voorgesteld als de locatie voor het centraal station van Cambridge, maar is nu een breed stuk park dat direct grenst aan Midsummer Common. - 16 Het stuk van Parker. Een van de bekendste open ruimtes in Cambridge. In het centrum van de stad wordt het begrensd door Park Terrace, Regent Terrace, Parkside en Gonville Place.
- 17 De stukken van Christus. In het centrum van de stad wordt het begrensd door het busstation, Christ's College, Emmanuel Road en King Street. Het heeft een typisch Victoriaans parkontwerp met met bomen omzoomde lanen. Kettle's Yard is het voormalige huis van Jim en Helen Ede en herbergt de mooie collectie kunst, uit het begin van deze eeuw, die ze aan de universiteit schonken. The Museum of Classical Archaeology is one of the few surviving collections of plaster casts of Greek & Roman sculpture in the world. The collection of about four hundred and fifty casts is open to the public and housed in a purpose-built Cast Gallery on the first floor of the Classics Faculty. Although nothing here is an original, nearly all the well-known (and not so well-known) works from the Classical world can be seen together under one roof. The reserve research collections consist of another two hundred plaster casts, Greek vases, pottery sherds, and epigraphic squeezes. These can be consulted by arrangement.
- 26 The Museum of Cambridge (Cambridge Folk Museum), Castle Street. Tu-Su (and M in summer) 10:30AM-5:30PM. The only local social history museum in Cambridge and is the most comprehensive collection representing life in the South Cambridgeshire villages. Housed in an old Coaching House, the museum is home to some 20,000 objects representing the history of local life away from the University.
- 27 The Polar Museum, Lensfield Road. Tu-Sa (and Su on Bank Holiday Weekends) 10AM-4PM. A short walk from the Fitzwilliam Museum is The Polar Museum. It was a finalist for The Museum of the Year Prize in 2011. Its extraordinary collection covers the Arctic and Antarctic, native peoples and the Golden Age of Exploration of heroes such as Scott and Shackleton. It also serves as the National Memorial to Scott and his men, as well as being the public front of The Scott Polar Research Institute which continues their scientific work. Special events, exhibitions, tours, children's activities and behind the scenes Open Days are held quite often.
- 28 The University Library, West Road. M-F 9AM-6PM, Sa 9AM-4:30PM. Exhibition of treasures and highlights from the Library's world-class collections of manuscripts and printed books. Two major exhibitions are held each year (roughly January to June and September to December): check website for details.
- 29 Museum of Technology, Cheddars Lane. Every day except Tuesdays. An exhibition of items from Cambridge's industrial past based at the city's old sewage pumping station on Riverside. Exhibits include the working steam and gas powered pumps, printing technology and items from several decades of electronics manufacturing within the city. The museum holds several 'steaming' days a year, usually on bank holidays, when engines and pumps may be seen working.
- 30 The Centre for Computing History, Rene Court, Coldham's Rd, CB1 3EW, ☏ 44 1223 214446. A small museum dedicated to the field of computing including video game consoles and arcade machines that can be played. The museum is also a hireable venue for "Gaming Parties".
Churches
The history of Cambridge is entwined with that of the Church of England. The colleges (see above) all have chapels which can be visited, but town churches also offer a rich insight into the history of the town and university, and are usually free. Even if you aren't interested in places of worship, they are well worth a few minutes attention and are peaceful places to enjoy.

Dating back to 1130, this is one of only four medieval round churches in England, and one of the most visited buildings in Cambridge. Besides the remarkable architecture, the building contains historical exhibitions and hosts occasional concerts and lectures. Included is a 20-minute film that provides an excellent overview of Cambridge's history. Tour guides based there offer walking tours of Cambridge which are highly rated. Adult £3.50.
- 32 Great St Mary's, Senate House Hill, CB2 3PQ, ☏ 44 1223 747273, ✉[email protected]. Open daily, free. This fine example of 15th-century English Perpendicular architecture is on the market square opposite King's College. As well as viewing the beautiful nave, visitors can climb the bell tower (admission £2.50) for spectacular views over the town.
- 33 St. Benet's, Bene’t Street, CB2 3PT, ☏ 44 1223 351927, ✉[email protected]. Tucked away in the lanes is this tiny 11th-century church. Its main attraction is a Saxon arch in the nave. One of several churches in town with bells, this one is a good location to see English bellringing. The times are unpredictable and not published but Sunday afternoons are your best bet. Please be quiet, ringing takes a surprising amount of concentration and the ringers can do without distractions.
- 34 All Saints, Jesus Lane, Jesus Lane, CB5 8BP, ☏ 44 1223 324442. Open daily, free. This 19th-century church is no longer used for worship but has been preserved as a rare example of the Arts and Crafts movement, featuring a highly ornate interior by Bodley, and windows and wall decorations by William Morris.
- 35 St. Andrew's, Chesterton, Church Street, CB4 1DT, ☏ 44 1223 306150, ✉[email protected]. A walk from town, but with an impressive (if somewhat faded) medieval Doom painting around the chancel arch, showing the Judgement and giving worshippers good reason to pay attention to the sermon.
Further afield
- 36 World War II Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial (3 miles west of the city on Highway A-1303). Daily 9AM-5PM except for Dec 25 and Jan 1. The cemetery is on land donated by Cambridge University and is the final resting place for 3,812 American military dead lost during the War in the Atlantic and Northern Europe. A monument is inscribed with the names of 5,126 Americans whose remains were never found or identified. The chapel contains mosaic maps of World War II campaigns and a mosaic memorial to American Air Forces on the ceiling. Vrij.
- 37 Imperial War Museum Duxford, CB22 4QR. This World War II airfield south of Cambridge houses the Imperial War Museum's aircraft collection, and is the largest aviation museum in Europe. As well as military aircraft, it houses a large collection of non-military aircraft including a Concorde. There is also a land warfare museum attached that has many examples of armoured vehicles from the First World War onwards. It really a full day for a proper visit. Bus Citi 7 takes about an hour to get there from the city centre or the bus station. Make sure that you board the Citi 7 bus that says Duxford as the Citi 7 bus also goes to two other places. Also note the time of the last bus to leave the museum as later buses go to the village of Duxford but not out to the museum. Flight shows are sometimes held; these days will be very busy.

- 40 Wimpole Hall & Home Farm, ☏ 44 1223 206000, ✉[email protected]. Wimpole Hall is the largest house in Cambridgeshire, set amongst rolling "Capability Brown" landscaped parklands, with a Home Farm hosting many rare breeds.
- 41 Wicken Fen, Lode Lane, Wicken, Ely, CB7 5XP. Wetland nature reserve; rare example of how the Fens all used to be before they were drained.
Further upstream from the Orchard, Grantchester is Byron's Pool, named after the (in)famous Lord Byron, of whom it is said to have swum there (at least, according to Brooke). The pool is now located below a modern weir at the junction of the Bourn Brook and the River Cam.
Doen
- Explore the backs. It's free, and gives you a real flavour of the city. You can walk through King's College, onto King's Parade, a beautiful row of exclusive shops. You can also experience the backs by punt which is extremely popular.
- Punting. 9:30AM-dusk daily. If anything is stereotypically 'Cambridge', this is it. Punting involves propelling a flat bottomed boat with a long wooden pole (quant) by pushing a pole against the shallow river bottom. For the full effect, take strawberries and Champagne to quaff as you glide effortlessly down the river. You can either travel along the famous College Backs or head out towards the village of Grantchester. Guided tours are also available from around £20.00 per person on the day. Save by booking online at (Rutherford's Punting Cambridge, Let's Go & Traditional Punting Website en Cambridge Chauffeur Punts. If you're up for more of an adventure, try it out for yourself on a self-hire boat Scudamore's Punting Company of Trinity College Hire. Pay per hour per punt for a quick trip along the College Backs, if you want longer it's cheaper to hire a punt for the day from Scudamore's for £120 - well worth it in summer when you head out towards Grantchester. A deposit (e.g. a credit card) is required. In fact if you turn up in the summer you'll find it hard not to go punting as touts assail you from all sides on the Quayside and Mill Pond streets. Punting to Grantchester (upriver) takes about an hour and a half for an experienced punter, and the complete journey would be difficult for first-timers. Along the Grantchester route there are riverbanks on the way for mooring up with meadowland suitable for picnics (Note that pranksters have been known to push unattended punts out into the river.)
- Walking tours. Guided walking tours are available all year round with a range of walking tours to choose from. These tours can be tailored to suit group interest with the central tourist office a good place start. There is also the option to experience Cambridge virtually with some University Colleges providing their own tours. These include King's College en St John's College with a city virtual tour also available.
- Rowing. Cambridge is renowned for rowing on the Cam. All colleges and some schools have their own clubs, and there are over half a dozen large 'town' clubs. There are a number of regattas and head races on the river throughout the year, though the highlight in the rowing calendar on the Cam is the annual bumping races. For College crews, the 'May' bumps are in June, for the local clubs, this normally is the fourth week in July. Over four evenings of racing (Tuesday - Friday), eights attempt to gain higher position by catching the crew ahead of them before being 'bumped' by the crew behind. Races take place downstream (north) of the city, between the A-14 road bridge and the railway bridge at Stourbridge Common, and are best viewed from the towpath alongside the river, or from the Plough pub in Fen Ditton, both accessible by foot from the town centre - words of warning though - if on the towpath side, be careful for the massive number of bikes that accompany the crews racing, if in the pub, you may not get a seat, and beer prices are at a premium.
- Cycling. Rent a bicycle and bike the mostly flat terrain around Cambridge. Popular destinations are Grantchester (3 km), American Cemetery (5 km), along River Cam towpath to Milton Country Park (5 km), Wicken Fen (12 km), Duxford Imperial War Museum especially during air-shows (15 km) and Ely (23 km). - Watch football Bij Cambridge United. They play in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. Their home ground is the Abbey Stadium on Newmarket Road.
- Play tennis for free at a city-council tennis court. No need to book – just bring racquets and balls. Parktennis runs free social games at Jesus Green on Saturday mornings.
- Play table tennis for free at Ping Pong Parlour in the Grafton Shopping Centre (balls and bats provided), or on an outdoor table.
Arts
- 1 Cambridge Corn Exchange. The city's centre for arts and entertainment.
- 2 ADC Theatre. Park Street. The University's playhouse. Hosts student and local amateur productions. Look out for performances by Footlights, this has been the training ground for many famous comedians. Tickets £4-10.
- 3 The Junction. Clifton Road. Artistic centre offering club nights, gigs, and new theatre, comedy, and dance. Ticket prices vary depending on the show/gig.
- Arts Picture House, 38–39 St Andrew's St. Various foreign and art-house films (see the current listing ). A more conventional selection can be found at the large multiplex at the Grafton Centre as well as the Light Cinema at Cambridge Leisure Park in Hills Road.
- 4 Arts Theatre, 6 St Edward's Passage. St. Edward's Passage Hosts a varied mix of professional drama, dance and opera including touring productions and an annual pantomime.
- 5 The Orchard, 45-47 Mill Way, Grantchester, ☏ 44 1223 845788. Daily 10:30AM-6:30PM. The target of many a punt journey up the river Cam from Cambridge, the Orchard is a famous tea rooms with a long list of famous patrons that include Rupert Brooke, Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and Bertrand Russell. Taking tea in The Orchard is a well-established Cambridge tradition. Planted with apple trees, the large garden of The Orchard is perfect for lounging on a deck chair in the sun with a cup of tea and a scone for sustenance. Long queues can be expected on sunny days, but there is always room to be found in the garden. Immortalised by the poet Rupert Brooke in his 1912 poem The Old Vicarage, Grantchester, Grantchester is a favourite amongst both tourists and students travelling upstream from Cambridge by punt to eat a picnic in the meadows or at the tea gardens called The Orchard. The story goes that in 1897 a group of Cambridge students persuaded the owner of Orchard House to serve them tea, and this subsequently became a regular practice. Later lodgers at Orchard House included the poet Rupert Brooke, who later moved next door to the Old Vicarage (built c. 1685). In 1912, while in Berlin, he would write his well-known poem The Old Vicarage, Grantchester, in which Brooke recalled happy days in the idyllic English surroundings of Cambridgeshire. (The Old Vicarage is now the home of the novelist Lord Jeffrey Archer of Weston-super-Mare.)

- Mill Road Winter Fair (First Saturday in December). Annual community festival based around the city's Mill Road featuring music, parades, food and art organised by local residents. The whole road is closed off just for the day.
- 8 Cambridge Beer Festival, Jesus Green. (May) Annual beer festival on Jesus Green, hosted by Cambridge & District CAMRA.

Work
Cambridge University students aren't allowed to work during term-time, so there are often possibilities for punting, hotel services, bar or waitering work for foreign nationals. Those from outside the EU require a work permit, see the Work section of Verenigd Koningkrijk for more details.
There are also the Science Park and Business Park located around the city limits which are home to many global gaming, digital, technology, bio-tech and pharmaceutical companies.
Kopen
King's Parade has numerous souvenir shops and gift shops with Cambridge (and London) branded merchandise. Scour the charity shops down Burleigh Street, Regent Street and Mill Road for bargains. Book collectors will find many shops especially Trinity Street. The market square in the centre of town has a general market Monday to Saturday with fruit and vegetables, bread and cakes, books, bicycle repair, tea and coffee, fast food and clothes, and a more arts-and-crafts oriented market on Sunday with pottery, ceramics, prints, clothing, etc. The surrounding streets and the nearby Grand Arcade en Lion Yard shopping centres have most of the common retail names and many individual shops to cater for most needs. De Grafton Centre has all the usual high-street shops in a mall and surrounding streets.
M&S Food (part of the Marks and Spencer department store chain) have a mini-supermarket that sells high-quality sandwiches, prepared meals, snacks and other groceries - usually at a high price. The main supermarket in the city centre is Sainsbury's on Sidney St. which stocks a full range of groceries and everyday products as well as alcohol and cigarettes. There are many more supermarkets including large Tesco (Chedder's Lane & Yarrow Road), Asda, Sainsbury's, and Waitrose superstores as well as a large Aldi discounter on the edge of the city.

Cambridge has a good range of eateries, as well as a daily market next to Great St Mary's Church where there are maybe 10-15 food stalls. Many of these offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, all for reasonable prices (a falafel wrap, for example, is £4-5).

He is considered the best chef in Cambridge. A contemporary, restaurant, convenient if you are near Parker's Piece, Anglia Ruskin University or the Grafton Centre.

Drinken
Charming pubs and peculiar drinking traditions abound. Cambridge has a colossal number of pubs, over 110 at the last count. For specialist and obscure spirits and wines check out Bacchanalia, Vinopolis or any of the Cambridge Wine Merchants stores.
- The Cambridge Blue, 85 Gwydir Street. A friendly pub with a large garden and good range of real ale.
- The Castle Inn, 38 Castle St. One of the best and busiest, traditional pubs in Cambridge. With an eclectic mix of locals and visitors, it can get impossibly busy of Friday and Saturday nights, however, the beer is excellent (the wine less so) and the food is home cooked and good value - the "Castle Burger" is a popular choice.
- The Champion of the Thames, 68 King Street. Old style pub in the centre of town with a blazing fireplace in the winter. One of the few pubs to sell a local cider rather than the mass-produced stuff.
- The Devonshire Arms, Devonshire Road (Mill Road end). Good selection of Milton Brewery beers. Good menu. Friendly, and handy for the station.
- The Eagle, 8 Benet Street. Watson and Crick were regulars here whilst in the process of unravelling the secrets of DNA. American airmen also burned their names into the roof of one of the bars during the Second World War.
- The Fort St George, Midsummer Common. Been there for hundreds of years, overlooks the Cam and Midsummer Common. Also one of the best places in town for a pub lunch! (Think Sunday roast.)
- The Free Press, 7 Prospect Row. Mobile phone use is not allowed, making this a pleasant quiet pub. Pub terrace
- The Granta, Newnham Road. A large terrace looks out on the river and surrounding nature. Popular during the summer, this pub serves excellent food, and rents out punts and canoes.
- The Kingston Arms, 33 Kingston St, Cambridge CB1 2NU, ☏ 44 1223 319414. Underrated old-fashioned free house with friendly atmosphere, open later than other Cambridge bars (2AM weekends, drinking-up time generally half an hour).
- The Live and Let Live, Mawson Road. A small and very friendly place with an excellent selection of real ales.
- The Maypole, 20A Portugal Place, CB5 8AF. A Cambridge institution, still independent and it's noticeable in its style and management. Smart pub, heated outdoor area. Enormous range of alcohol, perhaps slightly higher prices than the local average, but only slightly and it's worth it for the atmosphere. Late opening, last call's at 1 on weekends but boot-out's a good hour later.
- The Mill, Mill Lane. Cosy in the winter, bustling in the summer, this pub offers a refined selection of real ale.

- The Pickerel Inn, Magdelene Street. Claims to be the oldest pub in Cambridge.

- The Regal, St Andrews Street. Formerly a cinema, the Regal is the largest pub in the city and according to some, Europe. Offers a broad range of drinks including cheap ales you´d expect from a Wetherspoon´s chain pub, plus music and a rowdy dance floor in the evenings
- The Wrestlers, Newmarket Road. A bit of a walk from the City Centre, but great real ales and some of the best Thai food in town.
Country pubs
Grantchester also contains four pubs - the Red Lion and the Green Man are closest to the river bank, and the Rupert Brooke and Blue Ball are to the right (Cambridge direction) along the main street of the village.

- 1 Ballare, Lion Yard. The biggest club in Cambridge, known to students as Cindy's. International night on Thursday, cheesey student nights on Tuesday and Wednesday during Cambridge term.
- Vinyl (The Place), St Andrew's Street (Next to Waterstone's). Affectionately known as 'Life' (its previous name) to students.
- 2 Fez Club, 15 Market Passage (nr Sidney Street). The only one of Cambridge's larger clubs to not change its name every couple of years. Main student night is Monday with 'Fat Poppdaddy's'.
- Lola Lo, 1-6 Corn Exchange St. Three separate areas over four floors.

- Indigo Coffee House, 8 St. Edward's Passage (central). A tiny cheerful place with excellent coffee and bagels!
- Savinos, Emmanuel Street. Italian coffee bar. The best place in town where you can relax drinking a true and delicious Italian coffee or if you are hungry you can try a tasty Italian baguette with ingredients imported from Italy. While you are chilling out with your drink you can read Italian newspapers or listening to Italian music.

There is a range of options for accommodation in the city, although not so many for the budget traveller. In addition to guesthouses and hotels, there is a youth hostel and the option of staying in one of the rooms in a college. Blijf Veilig
Although Cambridge is one of the safest cities in the UK, you should still use your common sense at night and be careful in badly-lit areas outside the city centre. As of 2019, pick-pockets are taking advantage of the throngs of tourists on King's Parade and the nearby shops; keep an eye on valuables. It is wise to be on your guard around Regent Street & St Andrew's Street after midnight with anti-social behaviour due to people leaving pubs and nightclubs.
If you have a bike, keep it locked up to a solid object with a strong lock (preferably a D-lock), as cycle theft is big business. There are cycle parking places with cycle stands to lock you bike to, in several places around the city centre and at the railway station. "Secure" covered cycle parking with CCTV surveillance and cycle stands is available in the lower section of the Park Street car park and at the Grand Arcade cycle park.
The city's police station is on Parkside which is next door to the city's fire station. The opening times of the enquiry office is every day 8AM-10PM and bank holidays 9AM-5PM. There are a couple of smaller stations in the nearby villages of Histon and Sawston. The opening time of the enquiry office is for Histon, Mondays; 4PM-8PM, Wednesdays to Fridays; 8AM - midday, with Tuesdays, weekends and bank holidays closed. For Sawston, it is Wednesdays to Friday; 1PM-5PM, Mondays, weekends and bank holidays closed. The non-emergency contact number is 101, calls are fixed rate of £0.15 on landlines and mobiles.

- Grantchester: Take a day trip to enjoy the countryside and have scones and tea at The Orchard. With a long history of famous patrons such as Rupert Brooke, Virginia Woolf, EM Forster and Bertrand Russell, taking tea in The Orchard is a well established tradition. This large garden planted with apple trees is perfect for lounging on a deck chair in the sun with a cup of tea and a scone for sustenance. Or head out by punt with a picnic hamper.
- Great and Little Gransden Glimpse the real England! Take a bus (30 mins or so, bus no. 18, or 18A) from Drummer Street to the tiny ancient villages of Little and Great Gransden, which appear in the Magna Carta. Brimming with thatched cottage charm, horses and peaceful country walks, these villages offer escape into English village life. Pub food is available in both villages. Explore the ancient churchyards, the doll path in the meadow between them, and enjoy a leisurely hike around this tranquil village area. The Duncombe Arms in neighbouring Waresly serves excellent food, and offers BnB accommodation. Waresly is one or two hour walk from the riding stables at the bottom of Great Gransden. You could even join a horse trek. The undulating road offers wonderful views across farm land, and the ancient Waresly Wood, some of which is National Trust property. The 17th century open trestle post mill Windmill between The Gransden villages is unusually intact. It was last operational in 1912.
- Ely: Market town, with impressive Cathedral towering above the Fens (Ely used to be an island): regular trains and buses (9, X9, 12), or about two hours by cycle via NCN 51 to NCN 11.
- King's Lynn is well worth visiting for its wealth of architectural gems especially Nelson Street and Tuesday Market place. The explorer Vancouver came from here. Museums and churches and the largest brass in the country in St Mary's Church.
